Surprised Christmas isn't a holiday as they seem to jump at any excuse for a holiday nowadays.

Christmas has always been a 'normal' day here. I remember having a class at university on Christmas Day and none of the students knew what day it was!

However, it's been recognised for a long time. Even back in the 80's and 90's BKK was lit up at Christmas.

I'd guess that because it's a Christian holiday, it doesn't fit in with Thai beliefs. Likewise they don't celebrate Easter.

Wasn't the reason for that because it was the month of the late king's birthday?
I remember when he was alive Hua Hin was well lit and decorated in December, a lot more than now

You're probably right to a degree. However that wouldn't explain the Christmas trees, Santa costumes, Merry Christmas and the like.

Christmas is getting more popular in Thailand and Santa Claus is the star attraction for many Thai people. The Red clad figure is seen as lucky and a symbol of goodwill and good fortune in the countdown to the New Year

Thailand for the last 25 years has been home to a real Santa Claus who travels through the north of the country on his two wheel motorcycle sleigh. Known as the ‘Santa Claus of Rayong,’ he works a week ahead of the real Santa Claus. It’s days before Christmas and Santa Claus is coming to town. He’s also coming to Thailand as Thai people and children have come to embrace Christmas.

Buddhism is tolerant of all other religions, including Christianity, and this religious tolerance is part of the reason why a major Christian festival such as Christmas can also be enjoyed by Buddhists in Thailand.

The net is littered with pics of Christmas celebrations going back many years.

Bring it on, I say!
