Remember Thailand’s alcohol sales ban tomorrow!
As is custom for several of Thailand’s religious holidays, alcohol sales will be prohibited across the country tomorrow (Sunday) for Visakha Bucha Day. The day, the most significant in the Buddhist calendar, commemorates 3 defining events in the life of the Lord Buddha. These include his birth, attaining enlightenment at 35 years old, and then his death 45 years later, which all occurred on the full-moon day of the sixth lunar month.

Two important Buddha days next week when no alcohol will be sold, Wednesday 13th July, Asarnha Bucha Day and Thursday 14th, Wan Khao Phansa.

From midnight Friday until midnight Saturday.

Of course I doubt any bars will open from midnight Saturday.

So to recap, it seems it will be dry all day Saturday and all day Tue and Wed?

If I want to go out to eat I'll stick to the places that give me beer in soda cups for the whole period!

I rarely drink, so it doesn't affect me too much, but 3 days? Really? That sounds very harsh, both on drinkers and the businesses selling alcohol.

Always the way, give people a big long weekend, then tell all the businesses they have to close or can't sell. Thailand in a nutshell!

Friday is the king's birthday but there isn't an alcohol ban. The government in their wisdom have declared Monday as a public holiday, 'to stimulate tourism'.

The only 'non alcohol' days are Tuesday and Wednesday 1st and 2nd August.

That gives working Thais a 6 day holiday.

I don't think Wednesday is a holiday.

It most definitely is. It's the first day of Buddhist Lent.
Thailand is set to enjoy an extra-long SIX day weekend this weekend, which will also see immigration offices closed and a two day ban on the sale of alcohol.

The holiday begins on July 28 through August 2 inclusive.

On Tuesday (July 25) the Cabinet announced that it had suddenly resolved to make July 31 a public holiday.

The extended holiday begins on July 28, a date that marks the birthday anniversary of His Majesty the King.

The festive period then culminates with Asahna Bucha, a celebrated Buddhist holiday on August 1, followed by the Buddhist Lent Day on August 2.
