Collateral damage in the war on flies!

June is the worst month for flies, at least in areas close to the sea. Trying to eat at an outdoor restaurant this month and perhaps July is usually torture. I think this is the hatching month for a variety of fly species.

Flies breed all year round. The difference at this time of the year is the start of the rainy season. They breed in warm moist places, and once it starts to rain there are many more moist places to breed. They can also travel 3 or 4 kilometres from where they hatch, so even if you keep your immediate area clear of breeding places, the rapid increase in numbers cause them to travel further in search of food.

I’ve tried plastic fly traps with attractant (mixed with a little water from a powder sachet) in the back garden.
At first, it’s fun for the family to go out and check how many you’ve ‘trapped’ today.

After several days, the number of flies trapped grows exponentially. The attractant plus the smell of the dead and dying flies, brings in all the flies from around the neighbourhood.

Ultimately, no volunteers to clean out the reusable traps, so they were dumped.
Of course, I’m talking about Aussie flies, maybe different from your average Thai fly, and more numerous?
