Homemade Wheelchair Trike... need help for reverse gear.
Hello
I have just build a wheelchair Trike from a Yamaha Mio 125cc. I have tried to make a reverse gear from a 24 volt motor, But I can't make it perfect, and the Thai people there is helping me with this project do not understand anything of what i want.
Are there some engineering or other with technical sense who can help me finish my project Wheelchair Trike?
You can see the trike on Youtube, Search for : motorbike for wheelchair, hua hin

No worries Life of Brian - you haven't done anything wrong. Just wait a bit, there are some clever guys on this forum - I'm sure they'll come up with some innovative ideas for you.

Can't help, but great bike!!

Yes, it's impressive, I'm not back in Hua Hin for a few weeks so I can't help you with any engineering but what sort of a problem do you have with the reverse gear? I can imagine that a 24V motor could be a challenge to power on a scooter.

Re: Homemade Wheelchair Trike... need help for reverse gear
I have the motor and electric system already, but it's not so easy to connect it to the back wheel, with out burn down the electric system.
Re: Homemade Wheelchair Trike... need help for reverse gear
I think your idea is fantastic but confess that I haven't much knowledge beyond what I learned in Physics at school. As I recall, the Sinclair C5 electric vehicle used some kind of 'shunt' electric motor that generates a lot of torque. Is there a way you could use the engine to drive a DC-AC inverter that could power such a device that you could salvage from a washing machine or similar? Some of the inverters available on electrical generators can deliver the type of power (Watts) you would need and could be isolated from the bikes' electrics when engaged ~ 1kW. Running a DC motor from the bikes' electrical system would probably result in the burn-out you are describing, even with a relay installed.
I'd love to help more but perhaps a budding electrical engineer could help..?

Very nice creation indeed. I can't help with the reverse gear problem, but certainly know it can be done because you get bikes/trikes in Thailand with a reverse gear. In fact, the development over the road from us has one which they use for taking garden waste away. Just a motorbike really which has two wheels in the front and a big sort of basket.
Anyway, I'm sure someone will be around soon to offer help.

Hi LOB
Have you thought of simply have a small Rubber wheel directly on the shaft of the electric motor, and us a simple latch (even something like a 'DeStaco' Clamp) to engage the motor/wheel assembly directly onto 1 of the rear tyres?
Very simple and basic, but could possibly do the job.
