Documentaries
We have a thread for films and one for mini-series. I want to recommend a documentary, so let's start another...
THE SECRET HISTORY OF OUR STREETS - BBC 2
In the late 19th Century a philanthropist named Charles Booth produced a colour-coded street map of London that categorised each street according to the prosperity and class of the occupants, from upper-class and wealthy to "vicious and semi-criminal".
I've watched the first two episodes (of 6) on Deptford High St and Camberwell Grove with great interest. The programme follows the development of the road and the area from its origins to the present day, as fashions, prosperity and politics have their effect.
I'm from South London myself and found these episodes fascinating - in many cases it was like watching home movies of my own childhood in the 60s. Those responsible for the destruction of Deptford's old streets and the construction of those awful estates in the 60s should be shot.
I downloaded them from TheBox.biz

Re: Documentaries
Spot on DM, good shout to have a separate thread for documentaries. There's a few that have been mentioned elsewhere that should have a reminder here I guess, one in particular comes to mind: -
The Two Thousand Year Old Computer - documentary about the Antikythera mechanism, an ancient mechanical computer designed to calculate astronomical positions. It was recovered in 1900–1901 from the Antikythera wreck. Very, very interesting.
Another series of documentaries that I have been watching is the BBC series - "The Seven Wonders of The Industrial World". The programmes were dramatised versions of actual events: actors played the various figures involved, reciting monologues and dialogue based on their letters and writings. Again, a great series - sadly I think the cuts at the BBC these days will ensure the quality of pragrammes are going to be short lived.
The Seven Wonders in question, The Great Ship, The Brooklyn Bridge, Bell Rock Lighthouse, The Sewer King, The Panama Canal, The Line, The Hoover Dam.

Re: Documentaries
I really like INDUSTRIAL REVELATIONS as its sort of lke James Burke's old series CONNECTIONS blended with one of Fred Dibnah's series, and Mark Williams who did the first 2 series is an excellent presenter. His enthusasm for the topics is infectious, and they are great history docs.
Anyways..... theres a stack of the episodes here http://www.youtube.com/user/YORK15PROMOTIONS/videos in amongst other stuff
YouTube is a proper goldmine for documentaries being posted. The INDUSTRIAL WONDERS programmes above can be found, albeit in arabic subbed versions, on the Toob. Keep an eye on the YouTube thread for posts of collections when I find em.

Re: Documentaries
hmm, I did something wrong with the link, maybe someone can correct that as I'm still watching the documentary. P.S. I tried three times but the usual youtube link gave this. Sorry.

Re: Documentaries
BG, I think its to do with the way YT are now set up? Another poster had this problem recently as I subsequently did. I overcame it through trial and error but can't remember how? Maybe someone here could add some new guidance as to how to get the link down to the clip that members want to post and not the feature page?

Re: Documentaries
posting YouTube links
most of the time when you copy and paste a YouTube link it will look like this
Now all that stuff at the end of the address after & is the contextual link that associates it on YT with other smilar content.
To post the link here you can just delete everything from "&" onwards
so the end result is
highlight that and hit the YT button and hey presto....implanted video.
BG
If you like docs look on the other YouTube thread....I posted a stack there.

Re: Documentaries
Thanks for the heads up on INDUSTRIAL REVELATIONS SM - have really enjoyed it. Only found 1 series though - were anymore made?
Have also been watching "Coast" recently.... great series following a journey around the coast of Britain and it's isles, it's history, it's geology, it's wildlife etc. truly excellent. Saw the first series a few years ago, but have recently downloaded 6 series... (actually up to 7 now I believe).
