Sherpa - 2015

Early in the 2014 Mt. Everest climbing season, an ice avalanche killed 16 Sherpas carrying loads in the Khumbu Icefall. Passing through the Khumbu Icefall is the most dangerous part of the South Col route. That route was first successfully used by Tenzing Norgay and Sr. Edmund Hillary. It's the route used most often by commercial expeditions.

Tensions had been rising among the Sherpa for years. They see the expedition companies making money, and the Nepali government selling as many climbing permits as requested. Meanwhile the Sherpas do all the work, take the most risks, and are rewarded the least. The motives and actions of the companies and their clients (the climbers), the government, and the Sherpas come into conflict after the avalanche.

You don't have to understand expedition climbing to understand the film. The film does a good job of explaining it and the role of the Sherpas. The director and cinematographers captured enough to allow the editor to create a moving drama within a documentary.

Have just started watching BBC's "Seven Worlds, One Planet", the first episode being "North America" - absolutely stunning. Of course with Sir David Attenborough, how could it not be?! Truly incredible photography, a wonderful insight to North America's nature wonderfully narrated. Had me gobsmacked in parts - the "Firefly Fireworks" a standout for me.

I’ve been watching the series from the start and agree that both the content and photography are fantastic, all helped along by the one and only Sir David Attenborough. Not sure where you are watching the series PH, but the North America episode only aired on Sunday on BBC and was I think the 6th episode of the series.

Yep - Just worked that one out! Was catching up on a multitude of "missed" shows etc. Thought I was watching from episode 1, but as is my wont @rse about t*t!!

There is a doco airing at the moment on Netflix called 'Pandemic' - it was made last year just before Coronavirus and goes into the science behind various influenza strains, how rapidly they can spread, and how deadly they can be. Scientists actually predicted this virus before it occurred.

Good watching for those that like to play down such outbreaks, ... or maybe it was made to support big pharma ...

On a more lighter note, also on Netflix is 'Night on Earth' - which is an impressive wildlife series.

Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary (2019)

Galaxy Quest was a loving satire / comedy / dramatic / ironic and meta treatment of Star Trek and it's fans.

Twenty years after Galaxy Quest was released, came this 'making of' documentary. The story of how it came to be, what happened on the set, and how Dreamworks so misunderstood the movie the trailer conveyed almost none of the appeal to the target audience for which the director, writer, and actors were aiming.

Galaxy Quest became a cult classic. Many subsequent writers and directors of science fiction films loved Galaxy Quest, and it shows in their work. There are 13 Star Trek films. JJ Abrams directed 3 of them. He said Galaxy Quest is his second favorite Star Trek movie.

Thanks sateeb, this was really good. It brought back a lot of memories, some sweet, some bitter but even the bitter ones are easier to swallow now after so many years.
