Seeking engineers, can you help?
Are there any engineers, or ex-engineers in here? C'mon don't be shy!! Civil, electrical, mechanical, aeronautical, I have a cunning plan! No, not really, but I need to pick someones brains, and any advice or assistance would be gratefully received. Thanks in advance

That's a wide range of skills you are potentially looking at - is it that general?av8er wrote:Are there any engineers, or ex-engineers in here? C'mon don't be shy!! The wider the better, Dannie boy, the wider the better. Anyone with an engineering/mechanical background will be able to help, as my expertise in these areas is, well, um, limited. What's your field?

No use to you at all I'm afraid - I am a recently retired Senior HR manager, but I worked in the power generation business all my career and know lots of very well qualified engineers in all of the disciplines you mentioned, including mechanical. Not sure what it is you need to know, but if nobody else comes to you aid, give me the problem and I am sure I can get it resolved for you.av8er wrote:The wider the better, Dannie boy, the wider the better. I've done 30+ years in agriculture..my idea of a 'field-repair' is 'twatting' the bolt's threads with a hammer before winding the nut on.. (to stop the nut shaking loose after)..am I enlisted..??

Hi, i worked and built race motors, and also done a few years on pfc [power factor correction] Diesel engines and worked in a machine shop many years ago.I raced cars and know the dynamics of that and set up. What are you trying to do? Over unity power generation? Time machine? [you allready know you can only go forward i hope] Please advise a more accurately what you need

Aeronautical engineering, early life hands on mechanical, later specialising in Non-Destructive Testing.
Would be willing to assist, or at least advise.
Tell us more, or PM me.

As posted above, you need to be more specific. Are you are wanting deep theory, calculations, or hands on practical experience that combines a bit of both? There are many types of "engineers" and some that I have had the misfortune to work with could not "engineer" a good p---up!
May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil know`s you`re dead!

Nereus hit the nail on the head with a steam hammer. Practical engineers with the required common sense are not graduated from Universities: that is acquired on the job.Nereus wrote:As posted above, you need to be more specific. (I was just thinking of the wobbly bridge in London )
I have just retired from being an engineer from an aluminium smelter and the job required such diverse skills, do a bit of everything but always look at every option however crazy. I still made mistakes but learnt from them.
True story: a graduate chemical engineer at the plant formally requested the engineering department provide him with a design for a 6 metre 'straight edge' to check the straightness of steel bars. He had a vision of a monster frame would be required for the job. The project draughtsman, an ex boilermaker, sent the client a ball of string and instructions on how to use it to check bar straightness.

Re: Seeking engineers, can you help?
If a machine at my old work-place got a major mechanical fault the boss would always call us all over to assess the problem & put forward ideas to repair & improve..all silly ideas were just as welcome as the logical ones...they were the ones that often got the job done..
The OP seems to be keeping his cards very close to his chest on this one..???

Come on av8er, tell us all what it is that you have in mind for this "cunning plan"?av8er wrote:Are there any engineers, or ex-engineers in here? C'mon don't be shy!! He, He! There's no "cunning plan" Dannie boy, I was just having a "Baldrick" moment. What it is, is that when I retire to HH I will need a project to stop me getting into mischief-something I'm sure most of you can relate to. I tend to be a bit of a well-intentioned-but impatient-bodger, and I know from previous experience that having a cooler, more analytical person with me keeps me in check, and usually results in a good job, rather than my solo, bodged effort. All I'm doing is testing the water to see what, if any, experience other people have.

Your challenge is our challenge. I can see its not money making projects just for self amusement. we all need that.av8er wrote:He, He!
