Day 1 of long holiday weekend sees 2,000 injured, 22 killed on the nation's roads
The total number of people injured in road accidents on the first day of the long holiday reached almost 2,000 with 22 fatalities, according to the Royal Thai Police (RTP).

Pol Gen Roy Ingkapairote, deputy national police chief and commander of the RTP's Traffic Police Operation Centre, said on Saturday his officers have been told remain on the lookout for traffic offences due to the high volume of journeys from towns and cities to the provinces during the July 28 to Aug 2 long holiday weekend.

With 1,871 injuries and 22 fatalities on Friday alone, Pol Gen Roy said the main cause of accidents had been speeding, followed by drowsiness, changing lanes and dangerous overtaking.

He advised drivers to check their vehicles and study the route before leaving home to avoid road accidents.

Eight killed, three injured as pick-up hit by train at railway crossing
Eight people were killed and three others injured when a pick-up truck was hit by a freight train at a railway crossing in Muang district of this eastern province early on Friday morning.

The incident occurred around 3am at Moo 6 in tambon Khlong Udom Chonlajorn, Pol Capt Teerawat Pornprasit, a duty officer at Muang police station, said.

Police, along with medical personnel from Buddhasothorn Hospital and a team of rescuers, rushed to the scene.

They found freight train No. 833, with its engine still running, on the rail track. The train, loaded with containers, was en route from Lat Krabang inland container depot to the Laem Chabang Port.

A heavily damaged Isuzu pick-up truck was found nearby, with the bodies of five men and three women scattered over the area.

I would never allow any of my Thai family to travel on any bus, big or mini bus. The train may not be the best means of travel, but it is a damn sight safer than any bus.

I know it’s more expensive, but I always use a private taxi being driven by a professional driver. An air-conditioned and comfortable Toyota Camry is my choice.

Fifteen passengers were hospitalised after their bus ran into a ditch on the roadside Friday night in Chumphon province. The driver said he momentarily nodded off and lost control of the bus which was supposed to take the passengers to Hat Yai. Fifteen more suffered from minor injuries.

It's a plan. They are super sensitive about scaring away tourists these days, especially the Chinese.

Are you sure? My granddaughter's boyfriend works for Sawang Rescue, and they work 24/7 during the 7 deadly days - he hasn't started yet. I thought it was a bit closer to New Year.

If you've noticed they initiated a 4 day holiday over New Year, Dec 29 through Jan 1. In years past they made January 2 the last day. What it means this year is that besides ruining people's New Year day, everyone has to make a mad dash to get back home so they can be at work on Tuesday morning, January 2. Insane, truly insane. Watch the climbing road death and disaster statistics over the next 36 hours.
