Thaksin's youngest sister for PM

Pheu Thai decides to run with Yingluck

Published: 16/05/2011 at 06:08 PM
Online news: Local News

Yingluck Shinawatra, the youngest sister of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin, was on Monday chosen to fill the No.1 spot on the Pheu Thai party list in the July 3 general election.

This means she is now Pheu Thai's candidate for the post of prime minister after the July 3 general election.

A resolution placing Ms Yingluck at the top of the party list was passed at a meeting of the Pheu Thai executive and former MPs on Monday afternoon.
The decision was reported to have been unanimous.
Ms Yingluck was at the meeting.
Chalerm Yubamrung, former chairman of Pheu Thai MPs, said he was glad the party had eventually voted for Ms Yingluck. He had voiced support for her during the past two years, he said.
Ms Yingluck was born on June 21, 1967. She is the last of nine children of Mr Lert and Mrs Yindee Shinawatra.
She is the wife of Anusorn Amornchat, managing-director of M Link Asia Corporation, but they have not registered their marriage. They have one son, Supasek.
She graduated with a bachelor's degree from the faculty of political science and public administration at Chiang Mai University in 1988 and gained a master's in political science from Kentucky State University, in the United States, in 1990.
Later, she worked at Shinawatra Directories Ltd and was appointed managing director of the telecommunications company AIS, then owned by the Shinawatra family, in 2002.
After the sale of Shin Corporation to Temasek Holdings, Ms Yingluck resigned from AIS, but remained managing director of SC Asset Ltd, the Shinawatra family property development company.
She sold all her AIS share at a huge profit around the end of 2005. Currently, she is also a committee member and secretary of Thaicom Foundation.

At a press conference, Ms Yingluck thanked all members of Pheu Thai for having chosen her as the party's candidate for the prime ministership after the general election.

She said she was ready to take on the duties of the prime minister and called for all sides in society to reunite.
Ms Yingluck said she would not think about seeking revenge, but would do all she could to correct the mistakes made in the past.

She asked party members not to worry about her being a woman. She would use her femininity to bring about reconciliation.

"I will work side-by-side with all Pheu Thai members towards forming a government," she said.
She pledged to restore the economy, improve the people's livelihood, seek justice in the judicial process and follow the rules when taking the position.

Ms Yingluck asked party members to give her a chance, the same way they gave her brother Thaksin a chance.
Bumjaithai Party spokesman Supachai Jaisamut said the Pheu Thai Party's decision was not a surprise.

Ms Yingluck was the last card in the hand of former prime minister Thaksin, who had earlier relied heavily on his brother-in-law Somchai Wongsawat as prime minister.

Thaksin picked Ms Yingluck because he did not see anyone else more reliable, he said.

Earlier, Democrat Party secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban said Ms Yingluck's selection would into pose a problem.

She had no political experience and could hope to match Democrat Party leader and caretaker Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, he said.

He questioned how she could hope the administer the country effectively as prime minister if she had to wait for a call from overseas every time before she could make a decision.

Comment - Well, they are going to long lengths, it's hopeless really. The usual rubbish by the look of it, just with a pretty face.
Regardless of what happens on the 3rd July, it will be more of the same or worse.

What a mess!

Yes, the PT people are really voting for Thaksin. It makes no difference what face they put up there, it could just as well be a mannequin. Pete

We may as well just unwind the last year of stability and go right back to carnage because thats what will occur no matter who gets "elected" - bye bye high season 2011/2012.

Well, she's been cleared to run by the Election Commission and political commentators are calling her party the "No.1 party."

Oscar M may well be right with the above post.

Here in LOS, you can't be straight because it'll get you killed if you be that, period.

She's probably going to win and turn the clock back as nothing will be fixed from the merry-go-round that's happening now.

Well, when the military took over, everyone was calling for them to allow elections. They did, and look at the mess now. No matter who wins the vote, there will be trouble again. Hell, even if the reds and yellows joined forces, you'd soon have the pinks, blues, greens, purples, or whatever other color, standing up to protest. Bring back the military..... :duck:

I scan the Nation and Post daily to keep abreast of whats happening in the Kingdom, and both papers seem to be running daily puff pieces on her. The thing is the journos seem to ask the same set of questions over and over, and she keeps giving the same scriptedd non answers back day after day.

What I find interesting is a parallel between US T Party strategy and PT strategy in relation to Yingyang.... ie avoiding all forms of open debate and unscripted press contact. Methinks they have been taking pages from Palin's Playbook.

She is dead set on avoiding a televised debate between her and representatives of other parties and especially Abba... as we all know he would wipe the floor with her, as do her PT controllers and puppetmaster overseas. Abba should just set one up and when she refuses to take part put a cardboard cutout of her in the podium she should be standing in.

The biggest laugh is this stupid "only works on a thai voter" pledge:
As for social development, she confirmed that her party would resume the war on drugs initiated by the Thaksin administration and would make it a success within 12 months.
Yeah right.... cos the US has been fighting one for 30 years and still hasnt won...so I guess it needs that PT Magic Wand(tm) that fixes everything...or maybe just another dose of Thaksinista Death Squads.

IF PT win they will last less than 12 months. Once they do the amnesty thing there will be riots and a collapse. Thats if the EC doesnt just dismantle PT after the elections for the inevitable massive voter fraud that is bound to happen just like last time.

Personally, after the way PT screwed the smaller coalition parties last time Id be surprised if they can string a coalition together. I think even if they win in numbers the Dems will string a minority coalition together that will control the house. Basically the smaller parties know they have a better chance of getting bums on cabinet seats with the Dems in power. PT proved last time that they keep the cream and throw the smaller partners a basic number of scrappy seats.

It is going to go titsy whoever wins, and the street protests are set to get worse methinks.

And as OM said.... bang goes next high season.

If Thaksin and his whole extended family were 'tragically' killed tomorrow by turds from Karma's flying elephants - Thailand would be a lot better off.

I don't think that I've ever met a farang (less than slightly in the know of Thai Politics) that thinks the 'red shirts', and the parasite that is Thaksin, are the right way to go... but they will win again as all the Lao Kao swiggin' factory workers go falling over 'emselves to vote for the name. My wife used to tell me how she supported Thaksin....until I read her the facts - she pleaded ignorance. Her family support Thaksin - I cut off their little monthly allowance after the mess of last year when they were partcipating in the protests. Guess what.... Within a few weeks they told the wife they had changed now (the whole family  ) and understood what I was saying. Needless to say they get f**k all now. The red shirt motivation is no different to that of a flea ridden street dog... wave a steak in front of it and it'll bite!
If it's within arms reach, there's nothing to worry about!!

Seems that the Thais might be happy with a woman as PM, according to this poll/news article.

It's strange, imo change would be good, just a shame this woman is a puppet for someone else.

Enough of crinkly old men in their 70s in charge of what happens, I say.
