Ceiling/roof insulation
I was not referring to those pink and lime green monstrosities influenced by a hundred different architectural styles and retaining none of the individual aspects with any class but rather the properties we have seen springing up over the last 5-6 years that Thais generally have no interest in and sell almost exclusively to foreigners albeit many of them have Thai partners.
The first example gives you a nice breeze through the house, the second does not as is fairly common but in this case the rest of the windows and doors were designed to compensate for the closed front door which was chosen for privacy reasons due to the house being raised and close to the road.

Here is another twist on the insulation question:
Insulation said to contain excessive levels of formaldehyde was imported from China, Thailand and the US, News Ltd newspapers have reported.

Re: Ceiling/roof insulation
Coming back to roof insulation, It looks as though what i will try is single Bubble, which is a layer of bubble wrap between 2 reflective sheets. It seems to offer the best way of reflecting heat and thermal.
The best make appears to be Prodex which is a sealed version of the above, has an R rating of 15+, and wont deteriorate over time - apparently in normal bubble wrap the bubbles burst....
the stuff is about 5mm thick. Has anyone seen any in the HH area. I would be happy to travel to Petchaburi or elsewhere to order if there were savings as i am looking at buying about 300 sq.m.
any idea how the rolls of insulation in Homepro compare ?
Here is some more info and comparisons

Link broken above.
Any idea is rolls of fibreglass with foil each side help above ceiling?

Not sure why the link broke. lets try again...
http://www.insulation4less.com/Insulati ... ation.aspx
It is reflective surface, polyethylene backing, polyethylene bubbles, polyethylene backing, reflective surface.
In case the link above breaks the home page is
http://www.insulation4less.com/Default.aspx
and then click on 'comparing insulations'. The advantage of Prodex is that the bubbles are guaranteed not to burst - which i think is a common problem with the daily change from very high to low temperatures.

Re: Ceiling/roof insulation
there are obviously a thousand different types and methods to insulate your house, the higher the R-value then the better the insulation, whether the insulation is laid on the ceiling or under the roofing material is argueable as to which is best, some will say that having both is the best way to go.
reflective material should have an air space between the building material, however, it is best to check with the manufacturer as to any insulations intended application.
fft100- if you can get it then use it.
jimmy- check with the manufacturer if it can be used on the ceiling.
just to give you an idea, far north Australia(comparative to Thailand) has a 5.1 R-value minimum requirement for roofs. this is made up of all the materials and not just the insulation.
the type of roof covering will also either increase or decease the R-value depending on the material used.
darker- less
lighter- more
etc

Re: Ceiling/roof insulation
Somewhere, perhaps on this thread, someone spoke up about the dangers of laying insulation on the ceiling when down lights are present. I guess they develop high heat and need ventilation. I imagine you could go around and cut the insulation to fit over these type of lights but that would still leave them in a pocket.
I've been up in our attic and there are a lot of wires up there, alarm system, UBC/True, phone and other various things. It would be a pain to remove the insulation if maintenance on these things is ever needed. I feel insulation attached to the underside of the roof is probably the best way to go IMO. Pete

Re: Ceiling/roof insulation
^definately an issue, you can buy special protection covers, or turn a terracotta plant pot upside down and place over the light fitting.or keep the insulation away from the heat source, but this does lower the overall R-value.as gaps are present.

Re: Ceiling/roof insulation
The smaller volume you have to heat or chill is obviously better therefore insulating directly at point of heat exchange is preferable ie ceiling and walls.splitlid wrote: whether the insulation is laid on the ceiling or under the roofing material is argueable as to which is best, some will say that having both is the best way to go.
It also makes sense that in hot climates where the air gap between roof and ceilings can be raised to a much higher ambient temperature to add a reflective barrier to reduce this and so make the ceiling insulation more effective by reducing the delta between the house and roof space temperature.
The most common ceiling insulation is spun mineral wool insulation as it is primarly fire resistant and generally rot, bug resistant.
The foil faced bubble wrap I,m sure should not be used where heat sources such as light fittings are present in ceilings as it is not a fire resistant. It may also be potentially problematic if you do not have proper earth leakage protection fitted to electrical system
If you have solid block Walls where it's not possible to add insulation to the cavity then simply by adding polystyrene backed plaster board sheets or a similar built up inner skin using batterns, sheet insulation like the bubble wrap and the plaster boarded over to maintain fire resistance to the inside walls on at least the most exposed faces can have excellent results
Windows can have blinds or good doubled lined curtains as cheap method during the hottest part of the day. Solar reflecting film although more aesthetic to closed curtains etc is not as efficient against direct radiated heat as you may think.
Re: Ceiling/roof insulation
The selection in Homepro of bubble+ foil, or Polyethylene + foil is definitely better than it was a couple of years ago. Very impressed by the Miron+A. Good website by the manufacturer. R rating of 22 (!). I wonder who did there test for them ?
However, does anyone know of another source within 100km so i can compare prices. I always suspect that HH prices are higher than elsewhere.
I need between 250-300 sq.m of the stuff, so delivery charges may come into it.

There are 2 systems of R ratings used .The Imperial in north America and the Metric which is more widely used especially in the UK, AUS/NZ.
As a general rule 1 R Metric = 20 R Imperial .As ratings in excess of R4 in Metric are considered pretty high I think your Miron+A product would have to be rated Imperial unless a decimal point has been omitted.

IM happy and positive and done it at last ...
Well it goes almost 3 years back, im like almost everybody else on this chat
had leaks in my roof on and off for a long time...
Been considering alot regarding my roof probs for years
and finally did the spray foam on my roof to a fair price from a
more than fair Dutch Guy from Cha AM ( local ) MARCUS
My house in Borfai fairly big they sprayed last week apprx 340 sgm ..
Been as everybody know raining last 2 1/2 days and it works and the
temperatuer in the house apprx 10 pct cooler ..... im just happy i finally did it
This is no advertising just a happy guy with positive feed back .......
