dentists

Hi Carol - there have been other threads on this touchy subject so I would suggest doing a search. Most recently I think is 'Riders' implant saga.
Opinion varies such a lot and as you will see there have been doubts raised about hygeine standards. Whichever dentist you choose I would start with a scale and polish and progress slowly from there if you feel happy with the result.

My wife had a bad experience with a small Thai shop on Chomsin road around the corner from Chat Chai market.

We've both had very good service at the Hua Hin Dental Clinic on Srasong road across from All in Hua Hin or directly behind the old Hua Hin Shopping Mall. There are two in the same block but Hua Hin Dental Clinic is the leftmost one (when facing them) or is south of the other one and has a woman dentist. The place is as clean and professionally run as you would expect a dental office to be in a western country and the lady dentist seems very competent.

I've only had a cleaning done there but my wife had some much more complex work done that required several visits and we were happy with the outcome and satisfied that we were charged a reasonable price.

I agree with HHFarang. We have always had excellent service at this dental practise.

I have only had cleaning and one very small filling but the other half has had root canal, fillings, extractions etc etc

Dentist 2000 at the South end of town did some good work for me in 2004.
Don't know if it is still there.

Very clean and professional.

I will add my 'yay' to Hua Hin Dental Clinic who have done two root canal jobs and caps for me. I had previously used Dr Nikorn but while he was OK HHDC was much better. I also once used Dental 2000 and again it was OK but not as good as HHDC - I have also heard conflicting reports on them from others but that was some time ago so things may have changed.

Last year I had a cleaning job done at Dental 2000. This was Ok but it may have been a little expensive.

My GF went to HHDC last year and was very pleased with the lady dentist, so we both went to HHDC last month for a clean.

The dental surgery room was immediately on the left as you exit reception. It was no more than 6mt X 3mt. A lady dentist was sitting on a stool and there seemed to be no other room for her to work. Her spoken English was very poor. The cleaning treatment was as hard and as painful as it could be. I also found she had broken a part of my top front tooth which she repaired once I had pointed it out. There was no mirror but my tongue could feel the damaged area.

As there was no mirror to check the clean I left and paid (about Bht500 each)

When we returned home my GF was not best pleased with the work as she discovered a largish hole between her top two teeth. (My front teeth looked as though they needed a clean let alone having just had one!)

My GF confirmed that it was not the same lady dentist she saw last year. She returned to HHDC the next morning and saw another lady dentist in a different room ( the previous days one was not around) and the hole was repaired at half price!

My GF confirms that she has now seen three different lady dentists at HHDC and it appears to me that there is perhaps one lady dentist who is not up to the standard of the others.

There have been VERY many excellent reports about HHDC so I do not know if our experience was a one off, but perhaps we need to know the dentists names before making bookings?

As far as I was aware, when I was visiting HHDC on a regular basis for my work, there were only two dentists; a lady who looks like a Chinese-Thai and spoke good English, and a man, who was only there on some days and I never met. It is entirely possible that they have taken on extra dentists since, or that some jobs are performed by the dental assistants, of which there are at least two ladies, and I would imagine teeth cleaning is exactly the sort of job they could do. I believe that one of the assistants is the daughter of the lady dentist, so it is possible that she is training to qualify or has qualified to be a dentist.

WL,

The dentist we had also sounds like the one you describe... an older Chinese-Thai looking lady who spoke very good English. I didn't realize there were other dentists working in that office. :?

WL

The dentist was not young and I do not think there was any question of her being under training from my observation.

The use of the very cramped surgery I mentioned may be a clue.

As I have siad I am aware of the very many good reports, including from my GF , but our recent visit was grim.

I know this is a bit of a dated thread but just wanted to share my recent dental experience.
I had terrible tooth ace the kind of which I had never experienced for a couple of days, started around 3 weeks ago now.
When I decided enough was enough I went to Cool Smile in town, an x-ray was taken fast and very profesionally, it was then seen that I need root canal on the tooth. Heres the thing.. they sent me away with only pain killers and made an apointment for a specialist 4 days later.
By now I was in way too much pain so went to Dentist2000 and they done the same. The dentist then confirmed the need for a root canal, but he explained everything in geat deatail that nothing could be done until the infection was gone. So he gave me anti biotics and shaved the tooth down to stop irritaion, the pain went in a couple of days.
The root canal was done and completed in 2 trips, I am terrified of the dentist but he made the experince pain free and easy.
My main point here is that if I waited the 4 days to see the specialist from Cool Smile I have no idea what extra damage or pain I would have been in.
I was well pleased with Denist2000 and his kind of strict profesional aproach. Price was fair although I am sure you could find cheaper.

Mr T - I think if you had given the various costs your post would have been of more interest, because those of us living in HH are interested in such detail.

Good point,
At cool Smile for an x-ray it was only 100B as opposed to 200B at Dentist2000 but I did recieve a better diagnosis there.
The full cost of the root canal and medication(anti biotics) was 5200B.
5000B for the root canal and 200B for the pills.
So certainly not free but needs must.
Thanks for the input

I have excellent experience with Dr. Nikorn. He is not the cheapest, but IMHO probably the best. I had bridge work done in gold, which in my home country would be of such magnitude that it would be subject to public bidding under the EC major public works projects regulations. Dr. Nikorn is a true artist with a pleasant personality and an exquisite taste in (soft) jazz.
