Metabolic syndrome

Post by Bamboo Grove »

I was diagnosed with this last June and my doctor told me to lose weight. I had already lost about 10 kg before leaving Thailand in May but my blood pressure was high and my sugar level was dangerously high at 8,3, the normal being below 6.
I´ve carried on losing weight and I am now about 87 kg (down from 112 kg during my glory days  ). Last measurements showed suger levels at 5.9 and 6.0 so it might be that I will not need medication for type II diabetes. However, the days sitting in a bar from early afternoon till early morning are over and this may actually add a few years to my life.
Why I posted this was to show how important regular check ups are, particularly if you are over 40 and overweight.

Congratulations on listening to your Doc and adjusting your lifestyle. Care to share what specific changes worked for you?

The basic change was actually easy: I don´t work in a bar anymore. That cuts down the amount of beer I used to consume and just that made me lose a lot of kilos. Otherwise, there´s been no need to change much else. These things are individual, of course.

thats good to see that you are changing your lifestyle. Try to keep you Hemoglobin level A1C below 6 and you should be fine. Also, i tell my patients to use cinnamon as a alternative to sugar. It actually helps you to lower your blood glucose and cholesterol levels while acting as a sugar substitute.

I have had very high blood pressure for about 20 years now. I have been on every type of medication my doctor knows about. I have even been to see a specialist. No change was perceived.
I have always been over weight, so when I came to Thailand I lost nearly 4 stone. I even gave up smoking for 14 years, no change.
I went back to England and had my BP checked again. Still the same!
I now only drink a few pints of beer about once a week (last 10 months). Had a check up last month. BP still the same???
My Dr is still at a loss. My cholestrol has always been normal?... :|
Perhaps I am built to run hot and fast...

Perhaps you are like many people that freak out when such things are being tested and get a home kit for DIY. It was something I was diagnosed with. Had a BP test with a young doc recently, called back at a different time of day, had the steppy-boy with me that kept me pre-occupied and went in for the test - normal. I told her it would be.

I need to shift some weight though!

I don't know if my doctor was just being kind, but he told me there is something called 'White Coat Hypertension' that gives elevated readings whenever I'm around medical staff (and, No - it's nothing to do with the nurses uniforms :D ).

I check myself at home and register a BP of around 117/76, but it skyrockets to over 150 when in the doc's office.

Go figure

I have a digital BP reader and tested the whole family who were ok. When I tested myself (several times) the damned thing just sounded a warning alarm and went off the scale!! No i'm not joking...

Wow. Sid. You can't recommend a natural product and survive in the orthodox medical world. Whatever are you thinking!?

What are you eating and drinking, Randy? Junk food? Sodas? High meat content? Lots of salt?

Diet, diet, diet. Every time. High BP is just another disease of affluence. People sort of tinker at the edges of wanting to be cured but never do what is really necessary and look at what they eating. Next thing you know, between 50 and 55, they are gone to heart attacks. With my father it was 55. With most of his army buddies it was the same. They just loved having a good time, stuffing their fat faces with chips and booze, 'avin a larf' then wondering why they were sick and overweight.

Maybe that's why I'm so passionate about others who are stupid enough to die young and deprive their families of their wisdom and experience and continued presence in their lives. My father was a bright man but like so many, he thought he could beat the Grim Reaper and anyway, he would eventually get around to doing something about it. He never did and we lost a brilliant father. He sure as hell isn't enjoying the 'good life' now.

If you want to improve your health, it's very simple. STOP DOING WHAT IS MAKING YOU SICK! A chuffing pill won't do squat, except enrich the quacks and make you feel temporarily better. It's an illusion which people just love to buy into. A quick 5 minutes at the doc, he gives you some pills, then you go home to your sausage, egg and bacon to watch a bit of footie and you are puzzled as to why you still have your condition?

"All disease begins in the gut."
- Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine

There are options you can try but people don't do it, not because they can't but because they DON'T WANT TO! They spend years going to the quacks, when they could be sorted within a month.

Go on a juice fast for 10-30 days. The Master Cleanse is proven. Look it up.

Go on a raw food diet for 30 days. I tend not to like this myself since you do feel permanently hungry, whereas with something like a juice fast, you shut your digestion down and give your stomach a much needed rest, with NO hunger.

Or do it the slow way (it's too stressful to cut everything immediately) and take a couple of years gradually stripping out anything that is white. White sugar, white flours, refined salt, anything bleached. If it says 'natural' and doesn't have a seed or is not grown out of the soil, then dump it. Get rid of processed oils, dairy, grains (except unpolished Basmati Rice), booze, fags. Start moving your body but go easy. The first priority is to get the weight off and the BP into a normal range.

There is a movie which will probably inspire and deter you in equal measure called 'Simply Raw - Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days' here..
http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4507916 ... VDRip_XviD

It will work for most of the diseases of affluence, not just diabetes. As I said, I prefer the juice fast but the point of the movie is, you do not have to spend the rest of your life on Meds, simply managing symptoms and gradually deteriorating, enriching the medical profession every step of the way. Those who took part didn't find it easy but the results were astounding for an 'incurable' disease. If you want to go back to the addictive stuff. Fine, But you could add 5 years to your life with a proper cleanse.

Food companies LOVE fat people. The more addicted they can get you, the better the bottom line. They don't give a s**t about your health. The food labels are a scam. The packaging is seductive lies. That gorgeous skinny blonde chugging her 'ice cold coke down the back of her throat' will be this in a few short years...

Image

Change your eating habits:
1. Stop eating after 6 pm and then stop eating BEFORE you feel stuffed.
2. Chew thoroughly.
3. Don't drink ice water with your food. It puts out your digestive 'fire'. Sip water at body temperature.
4. Clean your internal pipework. It's no good being spotless on the outside if you are like a sewer on the inside.
5. If you are hungry it could be because your body isn't getting it's nutrients from your food and is telling you to eat again. Eat nutritious food instead of empty calories. You know which food it is. It's the stuff that should have you salivating but instead you are salivating at crap I wouldn't feed to pigs.
6. Take some probiotics or natural yoghurt (such as Lassi) to replenish the acidophilus anti-biotics have wiped out in your gut. Pro-biotics means 'For Life'. So what does 'anti-biotics' mean? Antibiotics are given out like candy over here.
7. Eat some 'live' fermented foods.

DO something about it. Start today. Get off your fat rear and make an effort. It won't kill you but it will almost certainly save your life. Go and find an ex-Royal Marine and do a two week marine training course on the beach. You'll be a as fit as a flea before you know it!

Talking never did a damn thing for anyone except gather like-minded sufferers around each other to have a mutual 'Kumbaya' and blame the docs, the pills, the other half. Anyone but yourself.

Calculate how much you have or will spend on Medicines over the course of your illness. Then calculate how much you could spend for a week or two at a naturopathic clinic and see how clever your mates, in the bar egging you on, really are.

Sorry, if you are offended. I just want you to get angry enough to prove me wrong.

there is actually something called "white coat syndrome" , where people get nervous around their doc, but since your BP is high when you check it at home, i don't think thats the case.

look out for hidden salts. canned foods, sodas, deli meat, are all high in sodium.
It could be from some medication that you are taking that actually causes your BP to increase. Do often get headaches or pain in your eyes?

High BP could also be signs of early renal disease, diabetes, among tons of other things. Not trying to scare you. Try to cut back even more on the beers.

There is always an underlying cause, could be from smoking that caused artery plaque buildup, etc.

Also, age naturally can raise your BP.

Moderate diet and exercise is the best way to go.

Second from the left, Sid. :lach:

Actually, once you are into your practice in America, you will surely be dealing with this several times per day? One reason why doctors dispense pills is because their patients (looking for a magic bullet) usually demand them. They won't change their lifestyle, so what's a poor doctor to do? I don't envy you having to deal with such people. You must know the outcomes are inevitable. I would have to develop a pretty thick skin.

Those who opt for natural 'holistic' approaches, tend to be more motivated. At least that's been my experience. When I have taken people through detox programs it's remarkable to watch them go through the emotional ups and downs yet I haven't had one bug out yet, saying 'it's too hard'. One of the reasons is, results start to show early on. Plus they are away from the usual distractions of home and can't dive into the fridge every time they want comfort food or chocolate. (I also keep a cattle prod in reserve). This is very different to a GP, who doesn't have the time to dedicate to individuals.

Would you agree or do you have a different view?

Mr&MrsPlum,

While I know from reading your posts and from PMs with you that you are sincere and really want to help people with their health :thumb: , I will say that even though I am guilty of the lifestyle that brings on many health problems, I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol when I was 18 and I was thin and hadn't yet started my hedonist ways (well, not for very long anyway :D ).

Sometimes it's heredity and there's little that can be done about it. Maybe a check of Randy's family history is in order. My parents (entire family) is rife with blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar problems, and most of them are devout Christians who don't (never have) drink or smoke; I'm the "black sheep" of the family.

There's more to health than lifestyle, even though that is a huge factor. DNA plays a very important role that sometimes is impossible to overcome, but should not be ignored.

Hi hh. You are right and no problem. All hands to the pump, my friend and I don't claim to have all the answers. I just tend to be the only one TO answer and only within my small level of understanding. Now we have Dr Sid on the board a more interesting debate can be had, if he'll oblige us.

You have forgotten perhaps that I have previously mentioned spiritual and emotional aspects so I agree with you. It's not just lifestyle. I focussed on diet, since for 80%+, this is the main problem and they all know it. So do you. Since the cause may not necessarily be clear, all aspects are addressed within naturopaths' programs. i.e. Cleansing, yoga, meditation, fasting, relaxation. Taking into account the condition and capacities of the individual.

I note your 'hereditary' point and also agree. The mental and physical state of the parents, at conception and through the pregnancy, can affect the child. Parents would have more robust children, if they themselves were healthy. Do a search for 'Pottinger's cats'. We are not cats but if his findings also apply to us, we are in big trouble.

If you do the research you will find many non-aggressive approaches that are based on the belief that all is possible. Just because one 'expert' says his methods won't work, doesn't mean nothing works. Millions have come to the same conclusion and they are no longer listening to the medical High Priests with the same degree of blind faith as they used to.

'It's genetic' seems to me to be another useful euphemism for 'We don't know'. Isn't everything 'genetic'?

There is a resignation in many of your posts. Calling something 'hereditary' would make doing nothing the easy option, wouldn't you say? If you watch the diabetes video there is a 25 yr old with the same attitude. He cheated on the course yet his Insulin shots still reduced from 70 units down to 5 within 30 days.

Have you ever tried the dietary path in the way that I have suggested? If not, how can you say it won't help you? I have offered to help but you have not taken up the offer. It's still on the table and really up to you. No charge from me. How about a challenge? If I can't help you to see an improvement then I will never make another health-related post on this board. If I do help you, you make a contribution to a charity of my choice. We'll start after the festivities are over.

For legal reasons, I can not prescribe or treat. There is nothing you will be eating that you can't find in any high street. We will set a limit of 30 days but will expect a notable improvement within 10 days.

Over to you. :thumb:

there is another thing called obstructive sleep apnea (OPA). of the people who have it, 90% of them dont know they actually have it. signs and symptoms include snoring at night, feeling tired during the day, lethargic, headaches. Many people will mask these symptoms as coffee will wake you up and vasoconstrict vessels in your head to relieve the headaches.

When we have a patient with uncontrolled hypertension, thats cant be controlled with meds, we always look towards OPA.

Talk to your doctor about OPA and maybe set up a sleep study. Its worth a shot.

Sid,

Yeah, I was suspected of having that at one time and had a sleep study scheduled... but then I found out what the treatment was if I did have it and didn't do the study.

I just couldn't see sleeping with a tube and little oxygen mask strapped to my head forcing oxygen into me. I used to snore a lot, but now only when I sleep on my back (or so I'm told) so I've become a side sleeper (however, I am (have always been) somewhat of an insomniac).

My parents always enforced an 8:00 p.m. bedtime during childhood and that meant no lights, no noise, and in bed. I was never sleepy that early so used to lie awake for hours with my own thoughts. I think that may be my life long insomnia culprit. Since I left their house, I've always been a night owl (stay up 'till I get tired enough to sleep)! Makes for some slow starts in the mornings though and the wife knows not to try to talk to me until after at least one cup of coffee.
