Update on the Russian Double Murder case on Jomtien Beach.
An update now on a story that has sent shockwaves through the Russian Community here in Pattaya. As we reported on our last program, two Russian Female Tourists were shot and killed on Jomtien Beach in the early hours of Saturday Morning. The bodies of Miss Tatiana Tsimfer aged 30 and Miss Liubov Svirkova aged 25 are now in the hands of Russian Embassy Officials as the murder investigation continues, overseen by Police Lieutenant General Asawin, the Region 2 Commander of Police. The all important CCTV Camera footage has now been examined by Police and excerpts of the tape were released to the press over the weekend. They showed a man, thought to be of Thai origin and wearing a baseball cap, loitering near the two women on the promenade for a few minutes. He then makes his way down to the beach and remains out of site of the camera for a period of 9 seconds before he is seen running back up to the promenade and is then seen on another camera leaving on his motorbike. Footprints at the scene suggest he was wearing combat boots and although the identity of the shooter is unknown to us, the Police tell us they believe they known who he is and for fear of compromising the investigation, his details are being held back. Further investigations into the murder victims suggest they are from affluent families back in Russia and because they were only checked into their Hotel for a short period of time, Police believe they were not involved in prostitution as claimed in a number of Thai National Newspapers.

I'm not trying to blacken the girls' names or reputations & if I am wrong, I am sincerely & deeply sorry, but, if they were working girls, considering who their clients might have been & who might have been involved in them getting the right to work in Thailand (or turning a blind eye to it), I think those people would be trying to pass them off as holidaymakers from affluent families. In a previous post I read, quoting a police or news report (not sure here or another forum) it said they were telephonists or similar. Both from affluent families, both doing fairly humdrum, not particularly well-paid jobs? Well, I suppose it's possible...

Russian women
I worked in the former Soviet Union and I can confirm that the law does not apply in the same way as the West.
Our chief engineer was fighting corruption in the power business; his house was raided by 3 armed men who sprayed his darkened bedroom with automatic fire, he and his wife and daughter dived under their beds, (with advance warning of a barking dog). One of the assailants shot one of his comrades and our engineer was shot in the arm; the assailants fled when our engineer started firing his own weapon. It can be lawless in the former Soviet Union and I believe that some people from the former Soviet Union view the areas outside as being the same, where life is still cheap for many people. Who killed these two women is a question thst I cannot answer, however few people would kill two women for a minor altercation. And if it were over a dispute about chairs, who would turn up at 5 am to terminate the women; logically how would anyone know that they were still to be found on the beach at 5 am unless someone knew that they would be there waiting. Bu can you ever rationalise a murder?

A male tour guide is now the key to the investigation into the murders of two women Russian tourists on Jomtien beach in Pattaya, Assawin Kwanmuang, chief of the Provincial Police Bureau 2, said yesterday.
The guide, who disappeared after the Saturday slayings, had reportedly taken the two tourists to visit nighttime entertainments every night.
Pattaya police called an emergency meeting yesterday to discuss the murders, Thai tourism authorities said.
''They've asked us to give them some time,'' said Tourism Authority of Thailand Pattaya Director Chaiwat Charoensuk.
The bodies of Tatiana Tsimfer, 30, and Liubov Svirkova, 25, were found riddled with bullets at 5 am Saturday in two beach chairs on Jomtien beach, adjacent to Pattaya Resort, in Chonburi province.
Beach security cameras indicated that the assailant was a tall man of ''indistinct nationality'' who fled on a motorcycle after shooting the women with a pistol.
As nothing was stolen from the two Russians, police have ruled out robbery as a possible motive for the slayings.
It is deemed unlikely that the two Russians were involved in prostitution or other criminal activities in Pattaya.
''I don't think they were prostitutes because they both had decent jobs in Russia and it was their first time to Pattaya,'' said Mr Chaiwat in a phone interview with BANGKOK POST

Thai man arrested in Russian tourists' slaying
A Thai man has been arrested in the beach resort town of Pattaya over the slaying of two Russian tourists last weekend, police said Friday.
Tatiana Tsimfer, 30, and Liubov Svirkova, 25, were found dead in their deckchairs last Saturday on Jomtien beach in Pattaya, some 150 kilometres (93 miles) southeast of here.
Anuchit Lamlert, 24, was arrested Thursday night and confessed to killing the women in an attempt to rob them, police said.
"He was arrested last night and early this morning we found the pistol that he used to shoot the two tourists," police Lieutenant General Asawin Kwanmuang told AFP.
He said police doubted that the motive for the killings was simply to rob the women, but added there was no indication that gangsters were involved.
