^^ This sort of thing is national news every day even when only Thais are involved. Unlike in UK, politics and scandal are glossed over because, well, defamation. This just leaves road accidents, petty crime (unless a really serious crime takes over the headlines), naughty monks and what is someone famous wearing today.

Cops up ante on foreign criminals
Authorities are ramping up their crackdown on foreign criminals who arrive in the guise of tourists and use Thailand as their base for committing crimes.

Pol Lt Gen Surapong Thanomjit, commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 8, said the government has instructed the Royal Thai Police and the Interior Ministry to take measures to deal with the problem, particularly in Phuket. Phuket police have set up a task force to crack down on these foreign criminals, he added.

This is fairplay I guess, but when someone playing cards, teaching yoga, scratching a car, or touching some coral is labelled a criminal and slapped on the front pages of national news to ramp up nationalism it gets very silly. Its the foreign scammers, fraudsters and real criminals that prey on Thais and tourists they should be looking for ... but those doing the looking are probably involved too.

Oooh those evil criminal kitesurfers threatening Thai national security ... hang them!

Regarding the comment above about those doing the looking are probably involved as in “Bent Coppers in the BBC’s Line of Duty”, I’ve been watching a series of the same name on Amazon Prime which investigated corruption within the Met Police in the 90’s - the synopsis of which is where’s there’s crime, there’s money and where there’s money there’s corruption!!

The witch hunt goes digital ...

British Tourist In Hot Water Over Video Clips Critical Of Thailand
TOURIST Police summoned a British tourist and gave him a warning to stop posting video clips critical of Thailand on social media or else be prosecuted, Naewna newspaper said today (May 1).

Pol. Lt. Col. Suwit Boonyaphen, attached to Mae Hong Son Tourist Police, said video clips posted by the British tourist, only identified as Mr. Thomas, have been critical of both Thai public and private agencies and may harm the country’s image, lead to misunderstanding and even affect the country’s security.

After tracking Thomas down at a house in Mae Na Toeng subdistrict, Pai district, Tourist Police invited him in for a talk to create an understanding and explain that posting such clips risks violating Thai law.

The British tourist was ordered to delete all the clips from YouTube and other social media platforms he had posted.

He was then taken to Pai police station to file a record of this incident with clips submitted as evidence and Thomas told that if he continues posting material that damages Thailand’s image he will face legal action according to Thai law.
