The gap between diesel and petrol is getting bigger and bigger - it’ll be a very long time before Thailand gets its vehicle emissions under control!!

Exactly, petrol now is the most expensive it has been for over a year back at 40, but at least the govt is looking after the loony truckers and belching buses!

As the more affluent slowly make the change to electric, the vast majority will be forced to extend the lives of their smoke belching pickups - helped by the Government providing subsidies - We’ll all be wearing masks again!!

Probably, but Thailand has much bigger problems outside of the great metropolis with crop burning.

It is a shame, but much of Thailand relies upon the diesel engine too much to suddenly swap diesel for other power. Whilst minimum wages haven't even reached 400฿/day, how is Somchai expected to swap his smoke belching vehicle for something cleaner? If the Government forced diesel vehicles off the road, Thailand would simply grind to a halt, which would result in unemployment/starvation/poverty. Face masks may be the better option.

Or they could just be forced to fix proper exhausts at testing stations

This will hurt a lot/get the truck drivers protesting again. Many things will have to increase in price, pushing inflation through the roof.

Thailand fuel/pump prices

It was bound to happen sooner or later - the country is broke and can’t afford to keep on providing subsidies, but of course you’re right that they’ll be protests and prices will rise

Not looking good.

Yes, a crazy situation. They've raised minimum wage in some provinces to 400฿/day, but the poor Thais will receive in one hand but see it snatched away, with interest from the other.

It will greatly degrade living condition for many Thais.

And how crazy (discriminatory) is it to have increased the minimum wages in some provinces and not others - is their electricity and fuel costs lower?

Not only some provinces but also some areas in some provinces. Good job that fuel prices, for example, are much cheaper in Pranburi and Prachuab town than in Hua Hin. Not!

Re subsidies for fuel in Thailand. As far as I remember, fuel costs from the refinery are basically the same. Just that the administrations tried to promote certain fuels over others, thus distorting the retail prices through differing tax rates and oil fund contributions for certain types of fuel.
They wanted to keep the price of diesel down, so that had low tax rate and was subsidised by the oil fund.
Benzine (91 and 95) had a high tax rate and a high contribution towards the oil fund until 91 was eventually phased out.
The blended fuels (gasohol) had a lower tax rate and was also subsidised by the oil fund, even though actual production costs were more. This is the fuel the authorities were trying to promote.
The result was that the locals went out to get diesel pickup trucks with bigger engines to take advantage of the lower cost while those of us who still use unblended gasoline bear the brunt of the oil fund contributions.
I think it is time for the fit to hit the shan, as now even a V6 diesel is being promoted at the upcoming motor show?
