It would seem the local authorities have no plan whatsoever for keeping HH looking nice and not like a demolition site.
On taking a friend around today I thought a trip to the fisherman's pier would be nice. That could have been the case had it not been for having to walk through the slowly collapsing construction site just in front of the pier.

And the Fri/Sat/Sun food stalls on the old pier have dried up too.

Haven't we all started a project and after working at it for a day think "this is just too much, its more trouble than its worth", but once started we have to see it through. It seems Thai can make a start, but do not feel a need to finish a project once started. The "If a job is worth doing, its worth doing well" philosophy that our fathers hammered into us seems to have been omitted here.

Nearly all, if not all, Western philosophy has been omitted here. Thailand is the world of obedience and unless Thais are forced to obey they won't follow through. There's no reason for Western philosophy to be taught here as logic is not part of Thai thinking. If it were taught it would be a curiosity and not something to incorporate into one's daily life. The generation of current 20 yr. old's are beginning to think differently. I suspect it's because of their exposure and embracing of a wider range of Western culture, via, TV, Film, Music, Art, Literature, Foreign travel, etc. In the not to distant future this could lead to larger culture clashes and a fracturing of Thai society but that's just my speculating.

I've just been watching one of the many 'Hua Hin Doomsday' videos that has been flying around since Covid. I was quite shocked to see many of the buildings in the pier area demolished. Quite an eyesore now actually.

Down on the beach road today and it is desolate, not a person around. Not surprising really. I could not walk along the fishing pier, it seems it is not allowed anymore. Many businesses gone and a few knocked down, it looks terrible.

I later spoke with a guy I know, he owns an electrical contracting business and has priced the electrical work for a single level shopping mall from the pier to the Chinese temple.

Does anyone know if this is the approved development plan. If so it will be a construction site for years. What a way to encourage tourism.

Steve, how did the demolition sites look? I know it won't look pretty, but have they made any effort to tidy the place up, or has it all been left, Grand Market style?

I'll have to get down there to look for myself at some point soon.

Honestly, it's enough to make you weep! My first, very brief, visit to Hua Hin in 2003 I stayed in the pier guest house near to the Chinese Temple. Very basic accommodation, to say the least  , but at 200 baht per night you got what you paid for!

A shopping mall all the way along the seafront?? Criminal!
This is the way

Just the same as Grand Market and Railway road demolitions, piles of bricks, concrete and timber. To me it was like walking around the demolished areas of old Liverpool, except I would never walk around there alone.

The movie one up pretty much shows what it is like. The road is also getting full of holes and should be relayed but we know that will never happen. Same as Soi 94.

It just seems such a shame as that used to be a really nice area.

Imagine paying 5k a night to stay in the Hilton then going for a walk and see what it is like now. I would never return.

I'm not sure if some re-development in this area would be a good thing or not. It all depends on what is built. I've enjoyed staying and eating in the pier type buildings but the area was ramshackle (or traditional).
I've noticed some nice beach lights have now been put along the beach. I'm still puzzled why the new beach showers near Centara don't have any water- the showers next to the lady offering foot washing.

I was down that area earlier and it just seems to get worse every time I drive through.

Wow, seeing that Walk about video, is an eye opener. The place will look a lot different
if all the illegal places get torn down. I guess the street can get widened a bit.
Lots of fond memories from us old travelers who have been visiting Hua Hin since the
70s. I have had a lot of good meals in many restaurants along that whole area.
