Giraffe on the loose in Chachoengsao

CHACHOENGSAO: The search was continuing for a giraffe 5-6 metres tall that escaped from one of many containers loaded with zoo animals being transported by trucks from Suvarnabhumi airport to an animal breeding station in Prachin Buri province.

The animals were imported by Safari World Plc, which operates a number of zoos in Thailand.

On Tuesday, the convoy of 24 trucks with the animals in containers departed from Suvarnabhumi airport about 4pm. The destination was an animal breeding station near Rojana Industrial Estate in Mahaphot district of Prachin Buri.

One of the trucks, a six-wheeler, was carrying a container with three giraffes.

Monthon Mongphet, 53, the driver, said that about 5.30pm, as the truck was moving slowly along Highway 304 in Bang Khla district, he saw two giraffes, one about 4 metres tall and the other 5-6 metres tall, running off into the roadside bushes.

He stopped and found out the metal sliding door of the container was open. It had apparently not been properly locked, allowing the two giraffes to get out, Mr Monthon said.

About 6pm, people driving along Highway 304 spotted two giraffes in bushes near the Bang Khla intersection in tambon Samet Nua.

They reported it to national park and wildlife officials at the 2nd Forest Conservation Office in Chon Buri's Si Racha district.
A team led by Phadet Laithong rushed to where the giraffes were seen.

They recaptured the 4-metre giraffe with a tranquilising shot. There was no sign of the other giraffe.

About 2.30am on Wednesday, Pin Kewkacha, executive chairman of Safari World, arrived at the spot to supervise the search.

Mr Pin said it was the first time something like this had occurred in the more than 30 years he had been in the business. He suspected the bolt on the door had been accidentally unlatched while the container was being transferred to the truck.

He was concerned the animal might stray onto the highway and be hit by a vehicle. Motorists could get hurt. Mr Pin was confident the animal would be recaptured.

He said the giraffes were imported from Africa.

I've deleted what was meant to be a humorous post from yesterday as inappropriate now.

Thai news per the wife is reporting that the Giraffe has been found dead. Will update when it hits the English language news.

I really hope some farmer didn't shoot it. I may go out of my mind if that is the case. :( :( :(

Escaped giraffe found dead in lotus ditch

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... otus-ditch

A giraffe that escaped from a container of zoo animals on the way to a breeding station in Prachin Buri on Tusday was found dead in Chachoengsao province.

The giraffe was found in the ditch in front of Sunrise Lagoon Hotel & Golf Club on Highway 304 along Chachoengsao-Phanom Sarakham route at around 1.30pm on Wednesday. The animal was partially covered with lotus leaves in the ditch, Thai media reported.

Safari World Plc staffers and rescue workers tried to retrieve the carcass from the ditch. Veterinarians would investigate the cause of the animal’s death.

On Tuesday, a convoy of 24 lorries with the animals in containers left Suvarnabhumi airport about 4pm. The destination was an animal breeding station near Rojana Industrial Estate in Mahaphot district of Prachin Buri.

The animals were imported by Safari World Plc, which operates a number of zoos in Thailand.

One of the lorries, a six-wheeler, was carrying a container with three giraffes. While the truck was travelling along Highway 304 in Bang Khla district, two giraffes ran off into the roadside bushes.

After being reported, a team of national park and wildlife officials at the 2nd Forest Conservation Office in Chon Buri's Si Racha district tracked down and recaptured a 4-metre-tall giraffe with a tranquiliser shot, but there was no sign of the other one. The search continued until the officials found the dead animal in the ditch on Thursday.

I've just seen the video on Thai news. Looks like some idiot on a motorcycle was chasing it, and nobbled it's legs in a collision.

Safari World says giraffe drowned

https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... fe-drowned

Zoo operator Safari World Plc has concluded that a giraffe which escaped from a lorry and was hit by a motorcycle had actually drowned as an autopsy revealed no injuries.

The giraffe, a four-year-old male which was found dead in a ditch in Chachoengsao, was one of two giraffes which escaped from the lorry on Tuesday. The other was a five-year-old female who is now safe.

"It's the female giraffe that was recorded by the car's dashcam," the zoo's veterinarian Anuwat Watthananoraset, said on Friday, referring to a clip shared on Facebook which shows a motorcycle bumping into the animal on Highway 304 in Chachoengsao.

The clip sparked outrage on social media.

"We found no wounds on her body," Dr Anuwat said. "She was not hit by the motorcycle," he added, despite the video suggesting she had been hit.

The zoo said it needed to shoot the two giraffes with tranquilisers during a search operation for the pair which, according to Safari World managing director Litti Kewkacha, involved a team of 100 staff and experts and took around two days. They decided to catch the female first because it was standing near a road and then the male which was seen in a field.

It was very dark at that time and though the male was shot with the tranquiliser, it did not get the complete dose leading it to become frightened and run across the road, Dr Anuwat said.(so they stuffed that up as well)

The team followed him but unfortunately failed to catch the animal. It was not until Thursday when the giraffe was found dead in a ditch in front of Sunrise Lagoon Hotel & Golf Club on the same road.

The male giraffe was one of 78 imported giraffes being transported to a zoo's animal breeding station in Prachin Buri's Mahaphot district.

I saw the video on Thai News, as I'm sure many of you have. It most definitely looked as though the giraffe was hit. Maybe I need a new TV :?

The original Bangkok Post report included a video clip of the motorcycle chasing the Giraffe - if you try to open it now it says that the video is not available - I’m sure there’s a very plausible reason for this and nothing to do with a cover up.

In most cases they are more than happy to capture some hapless and clueless person and charge him or her. What we have here possibly is a kid of a big shot on a motorcycle.

The way he overtook everybody else, there was little doubt in my mind he was chasing the poor giraffe.

A bit hard to tell from the video, and the idiot on the motorbike should not have got so close, but to me it looks like the giraffe kicked out at him, rather than he ran into it. :guns:

On the video I saw, it was the front legs that rose in the air as the back legs were hit.

Well see it how you want, but if the motorbike had hit the animal the bike should of been sent sprawling. Giraffes have a very ungainly gait, and all it is doing is jumping into the air as it kicks out in self defense. If the kick had of hit the bike, then again, the bike would have come off second best.
