The sale and distribution of alcoholic drinks is banned for the 24 hours from midnight on Saturday until midnight Sunday.

Deputy police spokesman Pol Col Kritsana Pattanacharoen on Friday told media that the ban was to honour the last day of Buddhist Lent and memorial day of the late HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

He said police enforcing the ban would check entertainment venues, department storesand shops at train stations and petrol stations.

Sellers and drinkers would be penalised if caught, he said.

Penalties for violating Section 59 of Alcohol Beverage Control Act are up to six-months imprisonment and/or a maximum fine of 10,000 baht.

Today I watched the Grand Prix Suzuka in a bar.
I ordered a soda and added Sang Som from a small bottle I brought with me.
I enjoyed this shitty day in a bar and evening I will stay at home, with my drinks.

Anyone know the dates for the 1st qtr of '20?

Last year I nipped down to KL on Macha Buddha to do a visa run, and found they celebrate the same day for the same lunar reason (I think..) but instead of quiet reflection with bars closed, have a big party with fireworks and dragon dances everywhere..
I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I shall be sober and you will still be ugly...

I gather that Makha Bucha falls on Feb 8th in 2020 and as that is a Saturday, Feb 10th is a public holiday in lieu.

- Will the bars be closed on the 8th, 10th - or both??

Cant help thinking-- it is very unlikely that any tourist or short term resident whould not return another time because they could not get a drink on one of these days, but it is one more minor insult that would add to others and make them consider alternatives.

Every full moon has religious significance in Thailand, and the most important ones are deemed to warrant bar closures.

But is that referencing any specific texts, or simply a general display of respect? The latter appears to be the case (most Thais I've spoken to seem vague about the reasoning)

Tourism is an important part of the Thai economy, but local traditions are also important. Could there be a better way of satisfying the latter without harming the former?

- I think so..

Anyone's who's been out on the town when there's been a power cut, knows how hundreds of candles suddenly appear and the raucous din of the music systems suddenly gives way to the gentle babble of conversation.

Add a full moon and you have something different, and rather special..

So, not just on Macha B - but every full moon.. - have a power out day for the bars. Let them open - but use no electricity for lighting or music..

The actual day, Makha Bucha day is alcohol free. I've never known the day in lieu because of a weekend being the same. It's just a public holiday.

Rumours have it that all alcohol sales will be suspended from tomorrow onwards for a period of 14 days. Can anyone confirm?

Can you give us a source of this rumour please? We can't have the forum blamed for causing panic. If there's no response by 13:00, we will need to delete it as scaremongering.

Will still give it until 13:00 - government are coming down hard on things like this. We don't want to be a panic buying catalyst.

Chonburi governor limits the sales of alcohol
-No alcohol sales between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM. In reality, as regular alcohol sales laws apply, this means one can only legally buy between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM as well as 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM. There is no total ban contrary to fake news that was on the internet yesterday. This is to help prevent gatherings.

There is another province that has banned all sales of alcohol. I can't find it currently. It was Nakham ?????
I'll have a search.
