CHANTHABURI: A retired senior policeman due to hear judgement in a land dispute case shot dead the plaintiff and his lawyer before being fatally shot by an on-duty police officer in a Chanthaburi courtroom on Tuesday morning.

He also wounded two other people who accompanied the slain plaintiff into the court.

Pol Maj Gen Thanin Chantratip, 67, was a defendant in a 10-year-long civil lawsuit concerning blocks of land in Tha Mai district.

He was in court waiting to hear a ruling in the case when plaintiff Bancha Porameekhanaporn arrived with his wife and two lawyers about 9.15am.

Media reported that the two sides began arguing and Pol Maj Gen Thanin drew his pistol and opened fire at Bancha and other members of his party.

Bancha and lawyer Wijai Sukharom died later at Prapokklao Hospital. Bancha was a lawyer for former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra during her rice-pledging scheme case. Bancha's wife Supaporn and another lawyer, Wichai Udomthanapat, were wounded.

Thanin was in turn shot by an on-duty police officer and severely wounded. He later also succumbed to his wound.

In case anybody is interested, the 22 stamped on the pistol is NOT the calibre, it is the model number.
GLOCK doesn’t have the easiest model number system to remember. A GLOCK 17 is a 9mm, so is a GLOCK 19. A GLOCK 20 is a 10mm while the 21 is a .45 ACP. The 22, 23, and 24, 27 and 35 are all .40 caliber handgun

The reaction will be ..." oh my, we should have metal detectors and security screening at all courtrooms..." :banghead:

Paralegal charged with murder of courtroom killer

Police on Wednesday arrested a paralegal on a charge of fatally shooting a retired deputy police inspector-general who had shot dead two people at Chanthaburi Court in Muang district on Tuesday.

Thanakorn Theerawarodom was taken into custody as he was leaving his room at Kasemsarn Hotel in Chanthaburi province on Wednesday morning. Police had a warrant for his arrest on a charge of murder.

Earlier news reports said that a court policeman shot former Pol Maj Gen Thanin Chantratip after he had fired shots that killed two of his adversaries in a long-running lawsuit, in a Chanthaburi courtroom on Tuesday morning.

Pol Col Krisana Patanacharoen, deputy spokesman of the Royal Thai Police, said on Wednesday that surveillance camera footage showed that Mr Thanakorn took the court policeman's pistol and shot back at the retired police major-general.

Thanin, 67, used a Glock .22 pistol to shoot prominent lawyer Bancha Porameesanaporn and his wife, and two other lawyers.

Before the shooting, they were all waiting for a hearing in a case related to their family dispute over the inheritance of 3,800 rai of land in Tha Mai district of Chanthaburi.

Thanin and Bancha were brothers-in-law, their wives the daughters of the late land owner. Bancha and one of his lawyers died in the courtroom. Thanin died later in hospital.

Sarawut Benjakul, secretary-general of the Office of the Judiciary, said on Wednesday that surveillance camera footage showed Thanin slipping into the courtroom without being screened for weapons while the court policeman was standing at attention for the morning national anthem played at 8am.
