3 VOA then 3 month tourist then GET OUT!!!!
I was talking to a guy in a bar down here in Chumphon last night. He'd just got back from his visa run to Ranong. He'd done 3 visa runs then gone down to Penang, got a 3 month tourist visa then thought he could just fall back into the 3 visa runs. When he arrived back in Immigration they gave him 7 days to get out. Bummer. My friend in the same situation has just called me. He went to Ranong and was told they have had so many trying the same thing they have now started to tell people if you go out you are not getting back in. Hes now on overstay and is working on his options. It looks like this way round the 3 VOA rule is a no no. Be warned people If you are in the same situation then do not travel to Ranong as they will refuse you re-entry. It looks like you either have to return home to get a multiple entry or try another country further afield. At least we now know where people stand. Take care!!!!!
I never forget a face but in your case I'll make an exception!
Maybe becuse there is no such thing as a 3 month tourist visa. It's one that lasts for 60 days and can possibly be extended by 30 days. Up to the imm officer.
As far as the 90 days on visa exemption within 180 days rules are concerned, it dosn't seem as though your friend abused those.
Was there another problem?

VOA abuse...
I've a few arrivals since they strated counting. Both at BKK and HKT but I've only seen on person get nabbed. In BKK the Officer simply raised his hand and a person came over to escort the offender to a seperate area. I was about 5 back in the line and watched the gent get ushered off the the side and behind a partition........ I know that in Phuket you'll get nothing at the Beach Road Immi Shop....... I popped in to get my nod as to being on the 90th Day for and O-A stayer and more that one person was being told go get to the border because, as of Feb, they still weren't bagging any overstays at that office. However they were warned that it could change at any minute and with the Tourist Police office next door it would allow for a nice mini lock up as the Patong police HQ is not that far away. Ouch! I had visited the BKK DT Immi to get a multiply reentry permit ( before they changed the OA rules) and saw a big chaged in truck with mostly Africans heading out of the compund next door. The copper noted to me that they were overstays, not a nice looking bunch to be locked with. I suppose the slammer in their home coutries is worse ( if that is imaginable) than the noted BKK Immi Lockup! On a not so long ago as a BKK depart I noted a few Africans ankle chained together. Not in the Royal Silk Lounge. I bet they wern't flying first class either!
Sorry my mistake. 60 +30 to me gives you a 3 month visa, yes technically its a 2 month with an extension. Didnt realise you had to be so precise when posting My friend is now concerned as the guy from Immigration couldnt tell himfor sure if he went down to Pennang and got another 60 day with a 30 day visa he would get in OK. I think he'll go monday so will let you know

Not having a go at you, H2ODunc
However, many people have made genuine mistakes over their visa situation and have felt the consequences. Ignorance of the law is no defence.
However, I still don't see what the problem is with your friend. If he/she goes to Penang then they're pretty much assured of getting another Tourist Visa, single entry, good for 60 days on entry into Thailand and an extension for 30 days thereafter for 1,900 Baht.
Currently, there's no limit to the number of times anyone can do this. The Thai authorities simply want to keep a track on everyone who's in their country and by making everyone get visas, it makes their life easier.
Just be sure that he/she has 10,000B in their pocket (or access to it) if they're given a hard time by Imm in Thailand. That amount is for a 30 day visa exemption stamp - there's pretty much no such thing as Visa on Arrival for Westerners. Again, semantic, I agree, but it's a point on which a lot of people fall down. Otherwise, the law is 20,000B if you come in with a proper visa - tourist or Non O.
Mind you, I've never known a Westerner get stopped for that. Sure Cambodians, Burmese, Laos etc but unless you're really stupid, no-one should have a problem at immigration.
Chok dii
