International Driving License (Permit)
Does anyone know about this ? In a local giveaway paper someone is advertising International Driving Licenses, Drive in Thailand, valid for 5 yrs.
My questions are: How can an International license be valid for 5 yrs?
How can you drive in the country of origin with an International License?
Maybe, as the old axiom says, If it's too good to be true, it is.
If this is a scam how can the person continue to advertise in a legitimate publication?

Re: International Driving License
Sounds like a scam, as far as I know you get something called an IDP (international driving permit) valid for one year in your own country that allows you to drive in others. This is how it works for Thais driving abroad anyway.
There isn't much 'legitimacy' in any media in Thailand so that answers the second question.

Re: International Driving License
There is no such thing as an International Driving License. There is an International Driving Permit which is valid for one year and issued in your own country and is linked to the driving groups in your home licence.

Sorry posts crossed
Re: International Driving License
I got last week my IDP at Phechaburi LTO and can now drive in europe with my thai driving license (+thai IDP) , thai IDP validity is 1 year .
Re: International Driving License
You can drive in Europe with just your Thai licence. An IDP is not necessary as most European countries are signatories to the 'now famous' treaties. The difference is between there and Thailand is that in Europe they understand the regulations. A policeman friend from the UK stayed with me recently and was fined for only having a UK photo licence. She was quite angry as she'd checked before leaving the UK. She said she would file a complaint via the UK police when she got home. Not sure whether she did.
Re: International Driving License
The same can happen in France , so many stupid policemen .... they just say you can't drive with a license which is not written in French, so with an IDP I hope to avoid that kind of problem

Re: International Driving License
As I travel in numerous countries for work, the question over International Driving Licenses/Permits has been raised many times.
Info. we have and abide to: -
1. No such thing as an International Driving Licence - it's basically a translation of your existing license.
2. Maximum "legal" validity is 3 years, although my company now recommend 1 year.
3. As 2 above, the majority of countries will issue 1 year validity.
4. Bit of info. here for UK license holders, but I would imagine the same applies in most places? https://www.postoffice.co.uk/internatio ... ing-permit
Best of luck and happy travels

Re: International Driving License
My International Driving Permit expired in July of 2014. Got stopped in a traffic stop near Market Village, last year, showed my expired license, the cop took a photo of it and I was waved on. I suppose that next time it may be different. One never knows, do one?

Re: International Driving License
I did a consulting job for a UN agency in Central asia about 10 yers ago. I was given a UN driving licence. I have shown it to police, rented cars with it, used it as ID. No problems
Re: International Driving License
in France you get an International Driving Permit free of charge and valid 3 years and it is translated in 5 languages (not in Thai)
but I don't know about an IDP here in Thailand I think you can get one in Petchaburi, cost ? validity ? languages ?
