New Ford Ranger Raptor
Ford Ranger spawns Raptor derivative

Rugged-looking mid-sized pickup comes with bold design, downsized diesel engine and 10-speed automatic.
Welcome to Raptor, an all-new derivative of today’s Ford Ranger pickup that made its world debut in Thailand this evening.
Inspired by the Raptor model of the full-size F-150 pickup sold in the US, the spruced-up version of the Ranger mid-size variation gets a number of bold-looking design cues.
They include that prominent grille and bumper design, front skid plate and flared wheel arches housing 17-inch wheels rimmed with all-terrain tyres from BF Goodrich. The brakes and suspension have been beefed-up, as well.
Inside, the Ranger Raptor is basically the same as that of the donor vehicle except that it is stacked with features and some bespoke details. Note the paddle shifters and steering wheel, which has a centre marker in the style of track-focused sports cars, plus the Raptor logos embedded in the seats.
Those technical credentials look advanced…
Yes they are, if you compare them with the current crop of pickups on sale at the moment. The Ranger Raptor comes with a new 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel developing 213hp and 500Nm of torque.
This engine-downsizing practice seems to make Isuzu’s look feeble in comparison. The diesel engine used in the D-Max and MU-X models displaces 1.9 litres but produces a far lower 150hp and 350Nm.
The Ranger Raptor’s diesel is mated exclusively to a 10-speed automatic and four-wheel-drive. Although no performance figures have been revealed, the Ranger Raptor promises to be faster than all other mid-size pickups available in the Thai market. There's also a drive mode selector to make the vehicle more responsive in the mud.
Will the next-gen Ranger use this powertrain?
It would be nice if that happens because it has always been a tradition by Ford in Thailand to introduce new technologies before its competition do.
Today’s Ranger is powered by either 150hp/385Nm 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel or 200hp/470Nm 3.2-litre five-potter. Both are hooked up to either six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
How much does it cost?
Ford hasn’t revealed pricing for the Ranger Raptor yet. However, sources at Ford say it will cost in excess of the 1.5 million baht because the Ranger Raptor can’t be taxed as a pickup in Thailand.
Since the Ranger Raptor has been developed primarily for Australia, it gets a more sophisticated suspension called watts linkage as used in the Everest SUV. The regular Ranger employs the leaf spring type as stipulated by Thai regulations.

Re: New Ford Ranger Raptor
Does it have a timing chain, or are they still staying with a belt?

No idea:

edit: it does mention this: A belt-in-oil design for the camshaft and oil pump drive belts

You had to know this was coming. F.O.R.D.
Re: New Ford Ranger Raptor
It is incredible how much power and torque is being developed by these modern engines.
My first Land Rover that I had when Adam was still running around in his nappies was:
Capacity: 2,052 cc (125.2 cu in)
Power: 51 hp (38 kW) @ 3,500 rpm
Torque: 87 lbf⋅ft (118 N⋅m) @ 2,000 rpm
Turbo chargers were then only found on ships, and very few of them at that. The fuel injection system was considered state of the art at the time.

It had pre-combustion chambers for fuel injection, and even in Australia, it was necessary to use a pre-heater to start it. If pulling a big load it was sometimes necessary to shift into low range gears on a steep hill!Fuel injection: CAV DPA rotary pump and CAV Pintaux injectors

Dayco is a belt manufacturer, of course they will pitch their product. No timing belts for me. When it fails usually the engine is destroyed. Have never heard of a timing chain failing. But if a timing chain needs attention it will tell you, a belt will not. Had Ford Everest in Maylaysia. Ford book said change belt every 70000 k. Service manager said 100000 k good enuf. On trip to China friend in 4x4 club had timing belt fail in his new Ford. Luckily no engine damage as it happened while starting but needed to phone brother in Penang to have a new belt sent. Not convenient.
When I bought that Everest any pickup could be bought in Malaysia with diesel engine but only Ford had diesel option for SUV, so I bought it. Nice car but would never buy a timing belt car if there were other options. As an aside, my impression when coming to HH was that the Ford dealer here is probably one of the most expensive I have ever encountered for parts and service.
Don’t know what the replacement schedule would be for an oil bath belt but more expensive as it would be messier
Re: New Ford Ranger Raptor
If the timing belt snaps this does not destroy the engine, it will bend a few valves in the cylinder head of which I have repaired quite a few
Re: New Ford Ranger Raptor
Maybe. I have also seen a few with bent conrods, broken pistons and scored cylinder walls.

Re: New Ford Ranger Raptor
The "few valves in the cylinder head" get bent due to the pistons hitting them. Resulting in exactly what Nereus says = engine finished
Re: New Ford Ranger Raptor
If it's a non-interference engine chain or belt doesn't matter because such engines are designed so the valves and piston at maximum extension do not occupy the same space. Interference engine? Choose Chain.

Re: New Ford Ranger Raptor
In the end it's still a Ford. I've owned several Ford vehicles and they were all crap. Never again.
Re: New Ford Ranger Raptor
Very few modern engines are non-interference. Some, not all, OHC engines are more likely to be non-interfernce.
As you you cannot tell the manufacturer what you prefer, the only option is to buy a car with your preference.
Ask a dealer which one it is and expect a blank look.

So the new Everest is crap too? I started to like that one and is or was considering it to be my next vehicle, but if it is crap maybe I should just forget about it?handdrummer wrote:In the end it's still a Ford. I've owned several Ford vehicles and they were all crap. Never again.

There aren't many 'larger' cars I haven't driven. I used to get 3 or 4 different hire cars a week with work. Apart from an irritating turbo problem that Ford refused to acknowledge for over a year, my current Ford Ranger is the most comfortable vehicle I've ever driven. I've had a few hired cars in Thailand, nothing has compared.huahin4ever wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2018 11:18 amSo the new Everest is crap too?
