Yet another Liam Neeson revenge story is the remake of the film I recommended below. For the sake of non Scandi audiences, I expect they'll leave out the pitch black humor of the original.

Nils is the very definition of both dependable and unemotional. His son dies of a heroin overdose. The police barely pay any attention. Nils investigates. After finding his son crossed a lowest level drug dealer, Nils 'convinces' the dealer to tell him who he works for. Nils works his way up the hierarchy, instigating a war between the local drug lord and his Serbian suppliers because they both think each other is killing their men.

Not your standard revenge movie. There is enough gruesomeness to please a Tarentino fan. But it also has what one reviewer called "a sharp sense of pitch-black Scandinavian humour".

Stars Stellan Skarsgard. You'll recognize him from Good Will Hunting, Ronin, multiple Pirates of the Caribbeans, Avengers and Thors.

In Swedish with subtitles.

A few for sci-fi fans which I enjoyed:

Arrival
A lot of science and linguistics in this rather unusual alien flick.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2543164/

Passengers
A bit like 'Gravity' where two people are stranded in space and end up falling in love. Starring the lovely Jennifer Lawrence from the Hunger Games series.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1355644/

ARQ
Time loop sciency mind bending stuff with this one, loved it.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5640450/

Stranger Things
A ten part series set in the 80s, loads of suspense and plenty of nostalgia especially for those born in the 70s!

I enjoyed the blood and guts of Hacksaw Ridge, which we downloaded a couple of days ago - incredible story. You just have to wonder at how much was real, and how much was made up by Hollywood.

Hanna - 2011

A revenge thriller, elevated by the performance of the title character, played by Saoirse Ronan (7 nominations for lead and supporting roles combined from Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA ). Other characters are well realized, essential for the viewers caring about their fates.

16 year old Hanna and her father, Erik, are just another family living off the land in an isolated cabin near the arctic circle while Erik schools Hanna in the killing arts. She, a willowy slip of a girl, eventually can best dad in hand to hand combat. He tells her she's ready, then places an analog era portable signal transmitter in front of her. When she's ready, she flips the switch. Erik and Hanna depart on their missions. The Agency on the other end of the transmitter mobilizes to kill both of them.

Kate Blanchette plays the character running the operation. She's deliciously ice cold, single-mindedly intent on winning this high stakes situation - and even better with fear and disbelief when things doesn't go as planned.

Colossal - 2017

Wow. Review excerpts from Rottentomatoes because they summarized it far better than I could.

It's a sci-fi/horror/psychodrama/comedy/thriller/revenge/romance film - and that jumble of a description not only works, it does so in spectacular fashion.
--
From its weird little prologue to a nearly perfect ending, Colossal is a trip in multiple meanings of that word.
--
Colossal's singular strangeness can be disorienting, but viewers who hang on may find that its genre-defying execution -- and Anne Hathaway's performance -- is well worth the ride.
--
The film is an original, funny, and surprisingly cathartic experience, a unique combination of content and themes that delivers laughs as well as thoughtful points of conversation

Brick

Mystery - thriller.

The writer/director combined 2 genres, Film Noir and Life in High School, then did them as indie art film. Usually, saying a film is 'unique' is like saying it's 'interesting' in that both are lukewarm praise but at least you watched all of it. The Sundance film festival thought it was unique in a good way, awarding the film a special jury prize for 'Originality of Vision'.

Probably of little interest unless you've seen enough Film Noir to understand the conventions, especially the rapid fire dialog full of the bent English. The writer created new bent English for this movie . Result is just far enough from standard English to be norish but close enough to understand it. For example, from the lead character to 5 guys who realized he just insulted them and are slowly moving to confrontation: "I got all five senses and I slept last night. That puts me six up on the lot of you."

Written and directed by Rian Johnson as his first feature film. You may know him as writer-director of Looper, or as co-writer and director of the latest Star Wars film.

A Terminator inspired character - Bollywood style

The movie title doesn't matter. I've had multiple assurances there is no need to watch the movie. And no reason to not watch the final scene. All you need to know is the obvious lead character is a robot. Who, in version 2.0, becomes the villain. Convincingly.

The uploader disabled linking to youtube. If you click the 'Watch on YouTube' you'll see the first 2m 17 sec which is an uninteresting hodgepodge of action scene bits.

Sit through that (while listening to beyond horrible voiceover - not dubbing - into what sounds like a Russian)
OR
1) copy and paste this URL into notepad or similar:

2) change ". com" to ".com"
3) copy and paste into browser address bar

Play Misty For Me

Sunday afternoon is sometimes 'film time' for us (especially when it's raining). Henry's been going on and on about a film called 'Play Misty For Me'. I was only 10 year's old when it was released in 1971 so obviously hadn't seen it, but as Clint Eastwood is the star I thought it was worth a look. And it certainly was - I loved it!

It's labelled as a 'crime/drama', but I would add psychological thriller to the genre. Yes, it's a tad dated, and a bit predictable at times, but it's a great film. It has a lot of similarities to Fatal Attraction (which Mr.VS hasn't seen), so I guess next Sunday we'll do compare/contrast.

I've realised the title of the thread is movies on DVD, and you won't find a DVD of this film in Thailand, but we all know ways and means of downloading it. A film for those who may have had a one-night stand at some point in their lives. I'll say no more.

Saw a review of "A Prayer Before Dawn" in the Guardian yesterday. It's another "real story" of a Brit getting banged up in The Big Tiger and his move into Muay Thai whilst there.
I just though "yeah, another one" but it was reviewed well and after finding the download on Pirate Bay, I watched it yesterday.
I'd had a few beers but it's definitely worth a second look. Pretty brutal. And the fact that for the first half it's almost totally in Thai just adds to the isolation that the bloke must have felt.
