Learning Thai
Im recently moved to Thailand and am determined to learn to read, write and speak Thai. I see many on here writing in thai so im assuming most speak. I am taking private lessons now and am also using online sources. I am curious to know how long it took some of you to learn (i know its an ongoing process ). What were your resources to learn. Any encouragement is appreciated.

This is not quite on your subject, but an observation. Before Thai I lived in China. There every lady friend I had was busy teaching me Chinese whether I liked it or not. Every friend I had married to a Chinese lady worked hard at becoming fluent encouraged by their wives. i have never encountered this in Thai and have heard guys married to Thai ladies who say that they discourage them from trying to speak Thai.

Re: Learning Thai
When I first met my Thai wife 13 years ago, I'd already started studying Thai. A good job really as she didn't/doesn't speak any English. This encouraged me to carry on. I initially used Benjawan Poomsan Becker and another book by David Smyth . I then moved on to this http://www.thai-language.com/
Don't give in, you'll eventually get there. Good luck!

Banjo. It didn't come overnight and at times I thought I'd never get there.
Probably took about three years before I could stop doing the translations in my head.
I tried to get friends interested so we could learn off each other...to no avail!

Re: Learning Thai
I am embarrassed. I have a friend 50ish guy, has lived in China 15y and speaks 2 Chinese languages fluently. He comes to Thai 3 times a yr for 3w at a time. After about 3 years of this he can carry on conversations quite easily. Everyday he takes lessons, not from certified teachers but from bar girls, girlfriends, waitresses etc--he says it is easy.
