Tropical Storm Talas causes flooding in North

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... g-in-north

NAN - Continual torrential rain brought by Tropical Storm Talas, now battering central Vietnam, has caused flash floods in several areas of Nan province.

The provincial office of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department reported small rivers connecting to the Nan River had risen rapidly and overflowed their banks, causing flooding in at  least three districts.

In Phu Phiang district, the Bang Tha Lo- Saeng Doa Road in tambon Fai Kaeo was covered with water about half a metre deep and impassable. At least 20 houses in a low-lying area close to the Nan River had been flooded.

Nannakorn School in tambon Na Pang had been temporarily evacuated and closed, the statement said.
In Pua district, the first floor of a building at Bansan School in tambon Sathan was flooded on Tuesday morning. Teachers and students had to move their belongings, books and teaching material to higher ground.

In Mae Charim district, strong flood currents tore apart a main bridge in Ban Nam Tuang in tambon Nam Phang. cutting the main transport route for the community.

The disaster office was closely monitoring the situation. People living near waterways were warned to prepare for further flooding and listen for updates.
In neighbouring Chiang Rai province, Bang Thung Luang School in Muang districtwas closed by flooding that began around 5am, reports said. There had been torrential rain overnight.
.............................................................
I have seen the Nan River in full flood. Very impressive sight.

Heavy rain brings flooding to Northeast

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... -northeast

"NORTHEAST – More than 1,000 rai of farmland in Nakhon Phanom has been flooded and people in Kalasin have been warned to brace for overflow from the Chi River after the region was pounded by heavy rain over the past week.

In Nakhon Phanom, assistance is being given to farmers in several districts whose rice fields were inundated by overflow from tributaries of the Mekong River.

They include Muang, That Phanom, Na Kae, Tha Uthen, Si Songkhram and Ban Phaeng districts.

Provincial governor Somchai Witthayadamrong said communities in other districts along the Mekong River had also been warned to prepare for flooding after the river level rose to 10 metres, only 3m below the critical level.

Mr Somchai said the river level was increasing by 50 centimetres per day. Villagers were advised to move their belongings to higher ground as the river could burst its banks if there was more more heavy rain."......

Dams unplugged as ‘Sonca’ threatens heavy rains

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/ ... s/30321848

Breaking News July 26, 2017 13:18 By The Nation

With tropical depression Sonca looming and heavy rainfall expected, the Royal Irrigation Department has ordered water released from 11 major dams in the North, Northeast and Central region.

There is a possibility of flooding in Ang Thong and Ayutthaya.

Department deputy chief Thongplew Kongjan said the major and mid-scale dams as of Monday held 44,394 million cubic metres of water – about 59 per cent of their combined capacity. That volume was 10,229 cubic metres more than they held at the same time last year, he said.

Eleven dams at high levels will release substantial amounts of water – Lampang’s Kiew Lom and Kiew Khor Ma, Phitsanulok’s Kwai Noi Bymrungdan, Sakhon Nakhon’s Nam Un and Nam Pung, Khon Kaen’s Ubolrat, Nakhon Ratchasima’s Lam Phra Phloeng, Ubol Ratchathani’s Sirindhorn, Lop Buri’s Pasak Jolasid, Uthai Thani’s Thab Salao and Suphan Buri’s Kra Sieo.

Suchat Charoensri, director of the 12th Royal Irrigation Office in Chai Nat, said the Chao Phraya Dam in that province is expected to receive a large volume of mountain runoff next week, so it will release comparatively more water.

Downstream rivers and canals will rise as a result by 15-25cm and flooding could occur in low-laying riverside areas in Ang Thong and Ayutthaya, he warned.

The Thai Meteorological Department on Wednesday morning downgraded tropical depression Sonca to an active low-pressure area as it moves over the Thai Northeast, lower North and upper Central region.

It is expected to dissipate by Friday, but rainfall is likely to be widespread, with “heavy” and “very heavy” downpours in some isolated areas. Citizens are advised to beware of severe weather triggering flash floods.

Sonca leaves ruinous signature

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... -signature

....."From a rail track buried under mudflow to several thousand rai of farmland swallowed by floods, tropical depression Sonca left its mark on the Northeast and Central Plains as it whipped through the regions Thursday.

Though Interior Minister Gen Anupong Paojinda tried to calm flood victims by assuring them the storm, which has since been downgraded, was forecast to clear up completely Friday, many face severe asset losses. Some have lost loved ones.".......

Severe floods continue

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... dated-isan (Photos at link)

Note: All of this is going to reach Bangkok and suburbs shortly. Then we'll see what improvements have been made to cope since the 2011 floods.
______________________________

Flooding persisted across the Northeast and some central provinces, with one death attributed to flooding in worst-hit Sakon Nakhon, as heavy rain continued on Saturday.

All 18 districts of Sakon Nakhon have been inundated, with water levels ranging from 70 to 200 centimetres. People in some residential areas and critically ill patients at Tao Ngoi Hospital in Tao Ngoi district were evacuated.

One person was killed in Kut Bak district and two were reported missing in Muang district in the worst flooding to hit the northeastern province in two decades.

The water was deepest in commercial areas on Sukkasem, Rat Pattana and Charoen Muang roads in central Sakon Nakhon. About 500 vehicles were submerged.

In Khon Kaen, blind students were evacuated from their school where one metre of water covered the property in Muang district. However, water levels were stabilising overall.

In Nakhon Ratchasima, an earth weir burst and flooded about 10,000 rai of residential and farm properties in 151 villages of Prathai district.

In Kalasin, 15 of 17 districts were flooded and about 500 houses in the provincial centre were inundated.

In Nakhon Phanom, tributaries of the rising Mekong River overflowed onto about 2,000 rai of farmland and riverside communities.

In Chaiyaphum, runoffs ranging from 1-2 metres deep affected thousands of residents and tens of thousands of rai of farmland in Bamnet Narong and Kaeng Khro districts.

In the Central Plains, runoff hit parts of Dan Sai district of Phetchabun. In Sukhothai, soldiers repaired punctured floodwalls and worked to alleviate flooding in Muang district.

In Ayutthaya, irrigation officials increased the discharge rate from the Rama VI dam to prepare for a rapid increase in inflows from Lop Buri, Chaiyaphum and Saraburi upstream.

Officials at the Chao Phraya dam in Chai Nat were doing the same to cope with faster inflows from upstream locations.

Persistent rain in upper parts of Thailand resulted from tropical storm Sonca, which has now weakened after reaching the country five days ago. The Meteorological Department expects the influence from the low pressure system will start to ease on Saturday and Sunday.

You have to wonder at some of these reports. The following was posted yesterday. The airport would needed to be closed long before the water got anywhere near 40 cm. A bit like the report last week where the claim was 100 metre high waves!

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... -continues

Airports Department director-general Darun Saengchai said the water level on the runway was about 40 centimetres high, and deemed too dangerous for aircraft. The department will assess the situation day by day before reopening the airport, he added.

Yes, Pete, keeping a very careful eye on the flow.. Saw it slowly coming down back in 2011 but didn't expect to be hit that badly at the time. The house was under waist-high water for three months..
Doesn't look particularly good from my present point of view..
