Every time they come up with new stuff that looks more crazy than the last one you read.

This is from Daily News

Minivan with completely bald tires stopped - but driver is allowed to carry on

BANGKOK: -- A minivan stopped on the Bang Na - Trat highway yesterday was found to have completely bald tires.

They were so worn down that the van could have had a blowout at any time.

But the police just let the driver go with a warning. The driver promised he would have them changed "tomorrow".

Police then advised him to drive slowly to avoid an accident.

Bang Pakong police had set up the checkpoint on the highway yesterday afternoon. They were checking minivans for overloading, speeding and roadworthiness. Passengers were being interviewed by officers about the behavior of drivers, reports Daily News.

This was all in the wake of the appalling accident on Monday that killed 25 when a minivan and pick-up collided and created a fireball in Chonburi.

Officers were shocked to see the state of 57 year old driver Sombat Sriwichai's completely bald tires.

His van was empty but he was on his way to Bangkok to pick up passengers.

They said he should change the tires because they were dangerous but let him go with a warning after he said he would change them tomorrow.

The officers then suggested that when he did pick up his passengers he should drive slowly so that if he did experience a blowout it would not be dangerous to the passengers.

Pictures of the checkpoint were posted on Facebook on the "Khon Khao Bang Pakong" page. The poster said:

"Share this - if you ever think you'll travel in a minivan again. These tires could explode at any minute. Police advised him to change them and he asked for a day to do it.

"Where is the safety in that?"

This huge crash that killed 25 people was really the result of the driver being greedy and the company he worked for being indifferent nazis towards those who work for it....pretty much par-for-the-course here.

The blazing Benz stories etc. (if not DUI) are often the results of people racing/lane weaving and refusing to yield due to a percieved loss of face if they do, despite the clearly obvious safety implications. Which, actually is how children behave.

Cut-it-down to the bone and we have the explanation for the road situation here.......face, greed, indifference, intoxification and immaturity. About as potent a mix as you can get.

Sorry state of affairs really. Thailand has many positives to it...but the road situation is not one of them.

Driver of overloaded passenger van fined, suspended

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... -suspended

The Land Transport Department has punished the driver of a passenger van found to be carrying far more passengers than it was licensed to seat.

Department director-general Sanit Promwong said on Wednesday the driver of the van running from Pichit to Kamphaeng Phet, whose name was not released, was fined the maximum 5,000 baht and banned from driving for 30 days, starting today.

Wachira Prakarn Transport Co, which operates the van, was also fined 20,000 baht and the vehicle was banned from the fleet, he said.

The driver and the company were penalised for crowding in too many passengers and neglect of public safety, he said. The department's action followed a complaint posted on Facebook by a passenger on Tuesday.

Thiti Phopana said the van he was riding in had 20 passengers in it. The van was registered to carry only 14 passengers, according to the department.

2017 death toll breaks 10-year record

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... ear-record

A total of 478 people were killed and 4,128 injured in road accidents during the "seven dangerous days" from Dec 29 to Jan 4, making the 2017 New Year death toll the highest in 10 years.

Deputy Interior Minister Suthee Makboon, chairman of the centre for the prevention and reduction of road accidents of the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, said on Jan 4, the last of the seven-day campaign, there were 340 accidents across the country in which 52 people were killed and 367 injured. The fatalities also included people injured in previous days who died on Wednesday.

In total, 3,919 accidents occurred between Dec 29 and Jan 4, killing 478 and injuring 4,128 people.

Most of the accidents (36.6%) were caused by drink driving, followed by speeding over the limits (31.31%).  Most, or 81.82%, involved motorcycles, and 8% pick-up trucks.

The majority of the accidents, 61.78%, happened on main highways, followed by 36.92% on rural roads.
Most of the accidents, 29.24%, took place between 4.01pm and 8pm, and 52.22% of the killed and injured were of the working age.
Four provinces which recorded no deaths were Mae Hong Son in the North and Yala, Ranong and Satun in the South.

The provinces with the highest number of accumulated accidents, 152 each, were Udon Thani in the Northeast and Chiang Mai in the North.
Chon Buri topped the death toll with 33, while Udon Thani and Chiang Mai recorded the highest number of injured, 164 each.

The 2017 New Year death toll of 478 was the highest over the past 10 years when the number of those killed in road
accidents was recorded at 449 in 2007; 401 in 2008; 357 in 2009; 347 in 2010; 358 in 2011; 321 in 2012; 365 in 2013; 366 in 2014; 341 in 2015; and, 380 in 2016.

Mr Suthee said during the seven days, 4.4 million vehicles were checked by the authorities and 727,438 people were charged with traffic-related offences.

During that period, the number of vehicles leaving and arriving in Bangkok was about 11 million in total, 26.10% up from 8.7 million on normal days, a factor that increased risks of accidents and caused higher numbers of deaths and injuries, he said.

Mr Suthee said lessons from the increased New Year 's death toll would be taken to mete out measures to be carried out before the Songkran festival.

Passenger killed, four hurt in latest van crash

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... -van-crash

KAMPHAENG PHET - A Myanmar woman was killed and four other people hurt when a passenger van ran off the road and hit a tree in the median ditch in Khanu Woralaksaburi district early on Friday morning.

The latest fatal accident involving public transport occurred at kilometre makers 392-393 on northbound Phahon Yothin Road in tambon Salokbat around 5.30am, said Pol Capt Bancha Sum-ngern, a duty-officer at Khanu Waralaksaburi police station.

Police and rescue workers found the crumpled van, which had Samut Sakhon licence plates, stopped head-on against a big tree in the ditch dividing the road.

One woman passenger from Myanmar was dead in the wreckage and three other passengers and the driver, Chatchawan Chanthamas, were injured and trapped in the vehicle. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital. Mr Chatchawan, 45, was badly hurt and could not give police a statement.

The van, belonging to Mittaparb Group Tour Co, was fueled by NGV gas contained in two cyclinders.
Thai media reported the van picked up four Myanmar passengers, three women and a man, from Samut Sakhon and was taking them to Tak’s Mae Sot district on the Myanmar border.

Police suspect the driver fell asleep at the wheel, but were still waiting to question him.

14 tourists flee burning van
Fourteen people narrowly escaped death as their gas-fuelled van caught fire while climbing the hilly road to Phu Thap Boek on Friday afternoon.

The tourist van was carrying 14 nurses and officials from a hospital in Samut Prakan to the popular tourist mountain when the fire broke out in the front of the vehicle at 4.30pm as it approached a viewpoint.

The driver, whose name was not given, said he had noticed the van's engine was overheating as it travelled uphill. On seeing smoke from the front, he immediately stopped the vehicle and warned all his passengers to flee.

Firefighters took about half an hour to put out the flames that engulfed the vehicle, and the shaken group of tourists cancelled their plan to reach the top of the mountain.

Concerns over passenger van safety have escalated following recent incidents that included a van-pickup collision in Chon Buri in which 25 people died. Authorities this week announced a plan to replace 6,400 vans serving the provinces from Bangkok with microbuses by the end of this year.

Long ago the major US bus companies, Greyhound and Continental, wouldn't hire drivers with an IQ over X. I don't know what the ceiling was but it was a bit below average per my understanding. The justification being that a lower IQ person is less distracted and concentrates on his immediate task better than a high IQ person. The drivers here must all be geniuses, especially when it comes to quickly making up stories to save their hide.  Pete

We're getting a couple of these a day now ...

Three injured when van overturns in Tak
Three people, one of them a pregnant woman, were injured after a van they were travelling in overturned in Ban Tak district of this northern border province early Sunday, police said.

The accident occurred at about 5.30am between kilometre markers 539 and 540 on Phahon Yothin Road in tambon Samokhon when the van crashed into a roadside railing and overturned, ending up lying upside down in the road's median ditch.

The driver and two passengers, one of them a pregnant woman, were injured, but not seriously. They were admitted to Ban Tak Hospital.

Amnat Phaengkamhaeng, 37, the driver, told police investigators he fell asleep at the wheel and lost control of the van.

The van was taking 10 passengers back to Tak from a degree commencement ceremony in Chiang Mai.

It is just amazing the statements that come out of this government

http://pattayaone.news/en/pm-vows-get-t ... nths-time/

Referring to the high road accidents and fatalities during the New Year’s long holidays despite the government’s “no drunk driving campaign, the prime minister said that his government had exhausted all the means to reduce the accidents and the resulting fatalities, “be it the use of Section 44 to impound cars, making arrests and everything and yet people still get killed.”

“Simple fact. If there are activities, there are consequences as occurred. Many people using cars, cheap oil, good roads and cars run faster while drunk driving remains. So what laws can solve these problems besides the spirit of joint participation of every one of us. You asked how they can be solved? We in the cabinet have discussed the issue long enough,” said the prime minister, adding that he preferred the next government to tackle the problems.
However, he said that he had one last option to deal with rogue public transport drivers within the next three months from now.

12 hurt when Bangkok-bound bus plunges into ditch

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... into-ditch

KAMPHAENG PHET - Twelve people were injured when a Bangkok-bound interprovincial passenger bus veered off the road and into a ditch in Muang district late on Monday night.

The double-decker bus came to a halt overturned in the centre ditch on Phahon Yothin Road at kilometre makers 430/600 in tambon Thammarong, said Pol Lt Col Paisarn Wannachai, a duty officer at Muang police station. The accident was reported to police around 11.30pm on Monday.

Wannachai, a duty officer at Muang police station. The accident was reported to police around 11.30pm on Monday.
Twelve passengers were given first aid at the scene before rescue workers sent them to Kamphaeng Phet Hospital. Other passengers had only minor injuries.

Bus driver Amnart Waipattha, 50, told police the bus was carrying 53 passengers and had left Phrae on Monday night for Bangkok. The accident occurred when a truck suddenly shifted into the right lane in front of him. He tried to avert a crash but lost control of the bus, which plunged into the ditch.

A 60-year-old passenger said he and most other passengers were sleeping at the time. He was jolted awake when the bus suddenly veered and leaned over. As passengers started shouting out in alarm, the bus seemed to hit something  and then fell into the ditch.

Police were investigating. Another bus was sent to take the passengers on to Bangkok.

Passenger killed when van rear-ends sugarcane truck

http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/general ... cane-truck

UDON THANI - A woman passenger was killed and six other people injured when the van they were travelling in from Bangkok to Sakon Nakhon crashed into a truck loaded with sugarcane in Kumpawapi district in the early hours of Tuesday.

The fatal crash occurred at kilometre makers 406-407 on Mittraparb Road in tambon Pakho around 4.30am on Tuesday, said Pol Capt Paiboon Chaisitthikul, a duty officer at Kumpawapi police station in Udon Thani province.

The van hit the rear of the heavily loaded 10-wheel truck. Rescue workers found seven people  trapped in  the van and extricated them from the wreckage.

One of the passengers, a woman, was dead and was identified later as Nisai Chanruethai, 65, of Sakon Nakhon. The six others in the van, including driver Boonlom Manoram, were injured. One of them was badly hurt and rushed to a nearby hospital.

Pol Capt Paiboon said the crash scene was a two-lane road and there were no lights.  Mr Boonlom, who was taken to the police station, admitted his van was travelling at high speed and said he did not see the truck in the left lane ahead of him until it was too late. He tried to shift into the right lane, but failed and the van slammed into the rear of the truck.

The police officer quoted the van driver as confessing that he had also been nodding off at the wheel at the time.
Truck driver Arkhom Olarat, 46, was unhurt. He told police he was delivering the sugarcane to a factory in the district at the time.

Police were investigating.
