Washer Dryer Combos

Post by HHCanuck »

I am considering purchasing a front load washer dryer combo. I used one in Korea a few years ago and really liked it they are very convenient for rainy days (like today). However online reviews are overall quite negative. Any owner that can give me their first hand experience/opinion.

I've only used the mechanical models and they're quite good. at the moment we have a Samsung digital washer and it's crap. the programing is confusing and it's failed twice. check online reviews for what you want.

Had one at home (Indesit) and got rid of it within 2 years as it took AGES to dry the clothes.

Also, you couldn't just wash a load then dry it. If you see what I mean. Say the max wash load was 5 kilos. The max drying load was less (say 3 kilos). That meant every wash had to be split into 2 loads for drying.

Have stayed about 10 times in serviced apartments in Dubai that have either Samsung or LG combo washer dryers. Like the poster above, the programming is very confusing. And, they take AGES to dry. By ages I mean something like.... a dozen t shirts taking in excess of 2 hours!

So no, I wouldn't recommend them at all.

Have you thought of buying a dehumidifier then hanging wet washing up? I recently bought one and amazed at the amount of moisture it sucks out of the air. It's winter here and very cold/damp and I often had condensation on the windows, that's why I bought it. When I hand-wash woolen sweaters in the winter I have to dry them inside. Used to take a good 24-36 hours to get them dry. Now I stick my dehumidifier in the room, hang the wet woolies up and they are dry in no time (8 hrs or so). And when I empty the tank in the dehumidifier it will have just 2 liters water in it. Another advantage of the dehumdifier versus dryer is.... you can dry everything with it, even delicate things like silk or wool. No shrinkage ever as it's not a direct form of drying like a dryer. Plus they are small. Mine is about 60cm high by maybe 40 wide and 20 deep. And it cost under 200 euros.

Having said all that though.... am sat here wondering if a dehumidifier isn't just the same as having your air-con on full blast in the room with wet washing?????

air-con and dehumidifier are different. one cools the air and the other removes moisture but you already knew that. in humid countries like Thailand a dehumidifier is very useful and can cut down on air-con use. most of them can run a hose from the unit to a drain so you don't have to empty them.

I hear what you're saying about negative reviews, but I had (an Electrolux) washer/dryer and used the washing cycle of it almost every single day for 15+ years. It must have been a lucky fluke machine as nothing ever went wrong with it and it worked perfectly throughout; I didn't even have to replace the rubber seal. However, I didn't use the dryer facility very often as I had a line dryer in the garden but when I did it worked fine, e.g. a couple of large towels were bone-dry in about forty minutes, 'though as said above, it won't dry a full load. You do need to empty the filter regularly - it makes a big difference to the drying capability/time.
On wet days I used a dehumidifier in a small room to dry sheets etc. very quickly and with minimal creasing, but that did used to whack up my electricity bill.

I've always been hesitant on "combinations" if the dryer unit goes bad does the washer?

When we looked at Washer/Dryer combos the salesmen at both Home Pro and Big Kang advised us against purchasing the dual unit. They both said it was a big hassle to use. Better to just purchase a separate Washer and Dryer.

With respect brianks, don't you find that par for the course at Home Pro? It seems whatever I've tried to buy in that shop, they've always tried to sell me something different.

maybe in this instance though, with good reason. In my somewhat limited experience, washer-dryers are a compromise and the dryer doesn't have very good performance. If you have the space, go for separate machines, you'll almost certainly get better performance and in the event one goes on the blink, you still have the other one functioning

I don't know, but a non-recommendation from Home Pro is 'usually' meaningless. Even buying a particular colour paint has been queried by their staff.

Ah but all you live in Hua Hin. When we built our home in Khanom we went to the Home Pro in Surat Thani. They were quite helpful as our salesman knew us as having purchased many appliances from them at the time. Interesting that he said the same thing we got from Big Kiang several years earlier. Down here many of us have had some good results at Home Pro in Surat Thani or Nakhon Si Thammarat.
