I've given your post some thought Steve. I'm wondering if they gave us a cruise around the bay just to prove the size of the waves.

Personally, I wasn't disappointed because I wasn't sure I was going to get back from Pattaya today, and I have an 8am hospital appointment in the morning. I am convinced the craft could have handled that weather easily, but not at speed. Many passengers would have been quite sick - I've seen it many times on cross channel ferries in the UK.

My only fear is what will they do when they have paying passengers? Will they make the journey regardless? It isn't nice travelling with puddles of sick everywhere. If not, what happens to passengers stranded on the wrong side of the Gulf?

Barrys, how did the previous company deal with cancellations?

So the Khao Takiab pier is the main docking pier for the ferry? What kind of traffic mayhem is the road to the beach nowadays? Can anyone share photos of the area? We are coming there anyway in a couple of weeks but it would nice to know in advance. Cheers!

The road to the beach is fine. Could have gone down in a canoe this morning

Big car park at the end of the road now.

The previous company ran for one high season only, unfortunately.
The weather then was a lot kinder than it appears to be this year.
Also, the service was only scheduled for 3 days per week.
The cancellation rate during the windy season, i.e. mid-December to end of February, was 10%.
Notice of cancellation was given to passengers by telephone at the latest on the day prior to the scheduled departure.
The decision was reached by weighing up the weather and shipping forecasts from several sources.

Anybody know which type of propulsion system this ferry has? Is it a conventional propeller, or a water jet?
Cannot really see from Big Boys photos, but from what can be seen it appears it may be a water jet.

If so I believe it may be some of the problem, as they need to have a relatively steady water flow, both on the intake and the jet outlet, and it is already evident that the vessel has a very shallow draught, which may lead to poor performance.

I don't know, but this is what somebody has said on a local transport group page:
the ferry is diesel engined (probably MTU's by the sound of 'em) with water jet drives - I'm a seaman!

Yes, I agree with him. As mentioned these type (exact) ferries have been running Hong Kong waters to and fro to China and various islands there for years. They can handle upper Thai gulf type seas and swells. I think part of the issue is an inexperienced crew and therefore their caution/hesitation. Unless they've been working out of Hong Kong or elsewhere on these type vessels, they have a learning curve to got through to gain confidence. Pete

We would tell people of the alternatives, e.g. taxi, minibus, etc., and give them the relevant phone numbers

Has anyone taken the ferry in either direction yet? I am curious how the
boat handles, and what kind of service is on board for drinks, or food etc.
I am totally unfamiliar with the ferry service outside of Canada.

I should have read the last page. Thanks Big Boy for your report. Guess I had better pack a snack
when we go from Pattaya to Hua Hin. I did ride a ferry from the main land in Honduras to
an island called Roatan, it was the same style as this ferry and had moderate waves on the
sailing. The boat was not new and we were in the Business class, and glad of it for the
recline bigger seats. This boat was a bit smaller than the Thai ferry, but was quite sea worthy.

There was a item about the ferry on local TV news and according to the Thais with me, the ferry service has been delayed to the end of the month due to weather concerns.
