Was checking Emirates flights to Manchester for Aug?Sept next year. Over 120k baht for business class.

Then checked the same flight to Amsterdam. A380 all 4 sectors 85k baht. Easy then to jump on a low cost carrier to Manch.

If your'e thinking of flying to the UK it's well worth checking out other European cities first..

Etihad were doing something similar a few weeks back, from memory it was about 105k to LHR and about 75k to Amsterdam.

Cheers DB...Would still rather fly on the top deck of the 380. Room at the back to relax in the bar. Just a nicer experience IMO.

Yes, it's worth looking at all the alternatives; I've just booked for four weeks over Chrismas and New year, leaving on a Saturday morning and arriving back on a Sunday evening with reasonable transit times and got Etihad from Frankfurt to Bangkok return for 637 pounds combined with a Luxair ticket for Luxembourg to Frankfurt return for 128 pounds. For a flight ticketed directly out of Luxembourg was well over a thousand for the same date and times. ( I could get to Frankfurt cheaper than that by bus or train but not in time for a morning flight. )

That I can understand, however my intention was only to support your view that flights can be considerably cheaper to close-by European destinations rather than direct to the UK - I've not yet flown on a A380, but hope to put that right next year

Absolutely DB.....Etihad and Qatar have introduced the 380 on flights to London and Paris from November I think so I will also be checking their fares as well

cheapest I've found from the US Philly to Bangkok on Qatar is $1160. Qatar is the best airline I've ever flown. Even the food is outstanding and the flight attendants are sooooo hot.

I've never even considered this option, but had a quick look at Turkish Airlines return from Heathrow in comparison to Amsterdam and there was a difference of some 300 quid - 850 vs 550!!

I can get a "cheapie" return to Amsterdam from Bristol on Easyjet (added to savings on getting to Heathrow)...... the only problem being when the LHG flies and what Easyjet will charge for the excess luggage she brings!! :banghead: :banghead:

Many thanks for the heads up on this option Sateeb - well worth looking into further.

BKK to Oslo ~£130.
Oslo to LGW ~£40.

Cheapest I've found with Norwegian Air.

A combination of cheaper fuel and declining rouble perhaps.

Transaero have return flights BKK-LHR for about 300 GBP in January/February.
Very lengthy layovers in VKO but if cost is the overriding factor a 300GBP return ticket is hard to beat.

Available through Skyscanner from yesterday.

I've just flown back Business Class from London on Etihad that used the A380 and have to say that it was a fantastic experience and I imagine equal/better than a lot of first class services using older generation planes. To add to the experience they are offering free wifi for the first six months so I was able to Skype my wife from 39,000 feet (not sure if she was pleased or envious?). So whilst it's not a cheap way to fly, it is certainly memorable - it made the BC sector from AUH to BKK seem very ordinary.

/\ Glad you enjoyed it on Etihad....I think I will be sticking with the Emirates option right now, only because of the A380 on all sectors.

dtaai-maai wrote:No bargains to offer, but I'd like some advice from you frequent fliers, and this seems like the best place to do it. My daughter is planning to visit from the UK (Notts) next summer.

1. I realise flights will be more expensive in Thai high season, but what about UK summer period?

2. Is it a rule of thumb that flights are cheaper if you book substantially in advance? If so, by how many months?

Hi if you fly before the summer UK school holidays , late June early July there are usually "cheap " flights available .
Not sure where your daughter prefers to fly from , Birmingham flights are usually cheaper than Heathrow flights but Heathrow is only airport where direct non stop flights are available .
Have never found that flights are cheaper in relation to booking period , scheduled international flights , have just checked our ticket price purchased in July , we leave UK in 10 days time , and it is showing same price as paid , reason we booked in July is that 2 tickets were booked with an upgrade on return trip using our ROP points and these upgrades have limited availability .

I had to travel back to Notts last week in a hurry due to a family bereavement and due to lack of choice, flew Air India to Birmingham via New Delhi. As well as being a good price, it was also surprisingly good, modern aircraft, 787's with good entertainment systems, no queuing at security in Delhi and a buffet curry and beer for about £5 in a reasonable terminal.
