Customs luxury car auction

Post by Nereus »

Want a luxury car? I have been to these in the past and they usually have a vast range of cars, not just "luxury". They also place a (sometimes ridiculous) reserve on most of them. I find it very difficult to follow and you would need to have somebody in the know with you. It is also necessary to place a deposit before hand to be able to bid. I am not sure, but I think a deposit is required on each car that you want to bid on.

Worth going before hand to look at what they have and you can get a catalogue that shows the reserve on each car. Caveat emptor!

Customs to auction 300 luxury cars

More than 300 seized luxury cars will be put up for auction at the Customs Department in Bangkok next month, with bids also accepted via smartphone. Deputy director general Rakob Srisupaat said the event... is a regular annual auction, with seized vehicles being sold to ensure their value does not depreciate it they are kept impounded for too long. The auction will be on July 17, he said. More than 300 luxury...with makes including Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bentley, Porsche and others - will be on offer.

Union Auction Co has been selected to handle the sales over the next two years. The department believed the company's professionalism, with over two decades of experience, would help push up the average auction price, he said.

Union Auction managing director Akepittaya Eamkongake said the company has introduced e-auctions through its website and via smartphone

People interested in bidding at the auction must place a 50,000 baht deposit.

I post this just as a matter of general interest. In previous years there has always been a selection of older cars, sometimes good restoration projects, but this does not seem to be the case this year.
...........................................................................................
I went to have a look at the cars yesterday, but it appears that the date shown in Bangkok Post article is not correct. The sale is on the 30th of this month, and none of the cars are yet on display. There are a couple of beaten up trucks parked there with customs seals on them, and 2 x Lamborghini’s with covers over them, none of which are listed on the handout catalogue.

What I cannot understand is the number of “common” makes of cars that have been seized, such as Toyotas, Hondas and Nissan. Some of the Toyotas in particular have very close serial numbers, almost as though they are one shipment from Japan.

There are a total of 289 cars listed, but it may not be all of them, as per the Lamborghini’s. All of them have reserve prices shown, but I do not know what happens if they fail to meet the reserve, or even attract a bid. I guess some lucky kid may end up being taken to School next month in a Lambo, as his Father is on his way to work at the Customs Office!

Bentley: 11 cars listed, 5 Continenial GT (sp!), 3 Continenial, 3 Flying Spur, from 2001 to 2006 year, reserve from 1,590,000 up to 3,180,000 Baht.

Benz: 45 Cars listed covering just about all models. From 1997 to 2012: reserves from 133,000 up to 3,220,000 Baht for a 2004 SL 500.

BMW 32 Cars listed, from 2002 up to 2010: 318i through to X6, reserves from 229,000 for the 318i, up to 2,880,000 Baht for a 2008 year 750Li.

Ferrari: Only 6 cars listed, I guess the rest have found a home in Surin already!
1x1998 F355 F1 Spider, reserve 3,150,000 Baht.
2x F430: 1x 2007 year reserve 10,240,000,

I had noticed a lot more monks walking about recently :naughty:

No R34 Skylines? I'll keep my money for the next monastic raid, there's got to be a Mizuno GTR tucked away somewhere, preferably in metallic saffron.

Do you know if the winning bids are inclusive of tax, or if that's just the basic cost, then you have to pay the outstanding tax on top?

I don`t really know, Frank. It is probably written on the handout, but I cannot read it!

OK, from what I have had translated it works as follows:

1. For each and every car you want to bid on: 50,000 Baht deposit to register.

2. Knock down price plus: up to 500,00 Baht, pay 3,500 Baht
from above price up to 1.5 Million: pay 4,280 Baht
all after 1.5 Million: pay 7,490 Baht
I think the above payments are what is called a "buyers premium" in the West. If that is the case it is a lot cheaper than the West, where the premium can be up to 15%, and usualy 10%.

3. 7.5 % VAT tax on the total cost.

The unpaid import duty is included in the selling price, and I guess that is why they have such high reserve prices. Still do not know what happens if the car fails to sell.

Thanks for taking the trouble, it makes sense.
I guess then that the reserve prices will be surpassed by a large margin, it would appear that the car is effectively free and they are simply auctioning off debt.
I presume they will ensure that the people they confiscated them from cannot bid on their 'own' vehicle -

Without giving away too much detail a mate was interested in bringing in a very collectable car. He contacted the customs people and was given an horrendous figure on tax so he gave up on the idea until he received a message. The suggestion was that maybe he would like to go ahead and import the car and default on the importation tax and have the car then confiscated to go on to auction.
Here was the rub..... an "arrangement" could be set up so as it could either be passed in at auction or a heavy reserve set so that only a suitable agent could finally make an acceptable offer for all concerned for said car . My mate is no fool and could also see thru the negative possibility of this deal, but still the fact that the offer came up raises questions.
Complexity is so simply overrated
