What Age car for Vehicle Inspection

Post by certocito »

Trying to find out if there is a specific date for a car to be inspected in Thailand. Is it the same as in UK with the MoT test or the TuV in Germany. Someone said it has to be done when the car is seven years old, if so what happens if you don't have it done...??!!

Yes, it is the next renewal date after 7 years old. If you do not have the certificate I doubt that they will renew the registration. It is a very simple check but needs to be done at an authorised garage / station where you will be issued with a certificate. In Bangkok the place I use charges 200 Baht. You can also renew the compulsory insurance at the same place.

There is a tester just before the lights at Cha-am left hand side. Has a sign outside. It is easy to miss.

The vehicles I have had tested are in good shape and all they seem to do is run it over a pit but have not looked under the vehicle. Set it on rollers and run the engine in gear and test brakes and emissions.

Takes about 15 min. Very nice guy and limited English. Get a certificate and off you go :)

KC garage under the flyover will do it. It's very basic and as has already been said, takes around 15 mins. KC will also arrange your tax. Bit of a 1 stop shop.

Last year I renewed the insurance and tax on my Vigo, which was seven years old, at the Viriya office on Canal Road and they told me that they needed to do this. They asked me to put the truck into a workshop behind the office and the engineer pretty much just looked at it and gave the OK, the whole thing took about five minutes.(The truck is low mileage and still pretty much looks like new.)

Yeah, in Rayong also you get the inspection done by Gov. people right at the registration office. It's a drive through line. The only thing they really looked for was an ID number somewhere inside the right front wheel. They had me turn the steering full left so they could find it. I really didn't know there was a VIN number on some piece down there. Like Steve, the vehicle still looks new and low mileage so they just listened to the engine and looked for tail pipe smoke. Took 5 minutes. At that time though the inspections were at 5 years, not 7. Pete

They have the facility to do it at office I use in Bangkok, but several years ago when I went there they told us to go and get it done at a private place. When I converted it to LPG I had to take it to the Government place for inspection, and there was also a time limit between when the place that fitted the LPG and issued the paper work, and the inspection. Cannot remember exactly how long it was, but I think only a week or so.

And just as a matter of interest as it involves inspection, it has been reported in the Bangkok Post that those expensive cars that were burnt on a transporter had been fitted with LPG: "as the inspection process is not as detailed"! It beggars belief if true.

When mine was inspected they were very thorough, checked the tubing underneath, even measured the distance from the rear bumper to the LPG tank! I have not been able to find out exactly, but have been told that the LPG tank has to be recertified after a period of time.

Slightly off topic but
those expensive cars that were burnt on a transporter had been fitted with LPG:
I suspect that is simply a ruse to import them as knockdown kits and avoid the normal import tax.

So it's a CKD is it?
Yes.
So the engine, wheels, glass, interior are all in a box somewhere ?
Yes.
So where is the box then?
It's that Lamborghini shaped box that you are looking at, the engine is carefully stowed in the back, the wheels are cleverly placed into wheel shaped wells at each corner, the glass is held into the box by rubber strips and the easiest place to store the interior was on the inside.
So it says here it runs on LPG.
Yes, we'll fit that when it's fully built up.
Excellent, no tax to pay, my daughter will love this.

I had an old Volvo and never took it for inspection in the 9 years I have had it, It's around 20 years old. Whenever I wanted to tax and insure it just took it to the insurance place and they done a rubbing of the chasis number and that was that.

Gail: We do the same with our 22 year old Cefiro and our baby Alpha/Arfur (who's only just over 10 years old). I guess it depends on who you know. There's a woman at our university who's an agent for the insurance company, and she also sorts out the tax. She (or we) take a rubbing of the chassis number, and the paperwork is then sorted. A darn sight easier than the dreaded MOTs in the UK...

Yes, that's basically what happened at my insurance company and I think it's because they have their own repair shop, they're also able to do their own inspections. (Or not!)

Hi,

Could I get some directions to KC garage. I've just moved to Hua Hin and have very limited knowledge of the area.

Is the flyover your talking about around soi 110?

Cheers

Drive South out of the City. At the Khao Takiab turning there's also a U Turn. The garage is about 3/4 of the way around the U Turn.
