where to buy a cheap car ?

Post by fabman »

hi guys , i am thinking about buying a car , i wont be doing many miles in it ( mainly local ) just shopping etc and taking the dog out occasionally ( hes to big for the motorbike now  ) also i am not in Hua Hin all year round .

does anyone know someone who would like to sell a basic small/medium sized car , or is there a local dealer that would be able to help me .

i am thinking around the 30-40 thousand baht mark . definitely not more than 50 thousand baht.

i know i wouldn't have any trouble picking up a car for this price in the UK but here in Thailand they are much harder to find ...

cheers

Not sure what you'd get for that money, but as a rough guide a 20 year old Toyota Corolla will cost about three times that much. A sidecar for your motorbike might be a better investment and probably much, much safer.
Sorry that is of no help.

I do actually know a farang who bought an old (very old!) Nissan Sunny for 30k baht, but it was literally falling apart. He somehow manages to make regular trips between Petchaburi and Chaam in the thing, but to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't dream of accepting a lift in the thing. The wheel arches have completely rusted away, there is no driver's window now. And he has spent at least another 30k on it since he bought it just to keep it going.

You'll be very lucky to get anything drivable for under 100k and much better off doing as Frank suggests above, get a sidecar for your motorbike.

if you really need a car for the couple of months you're here, why not look into a long-term rental? That would at least give you the option of a set of wheels that is not falling apart, and solves the insurance hassles as well.
