British Expat going to Germany with wife

Post by frank.schoebel »

Hi there,

I'm a UK Citizen (name notwithstanding) with a Thai wife.
Been here 1 year together, got married 9 months ago.
We applied for Entry Clearance to the UK a few months ago - but she got knocked back.
Appeal is pending, paperwork already submitted.

I have a great opportunity to do some very well paid work in Germany - an offer I do not want to refuse. And I need to get out of Thailand in any case.

Could I get a family visa for my wife so that she could join me in Germany? Or some other form of visa to Germany?

Many thanks in advance

Frankie...

I would have thought that if the German (I assume) company is willing to pay good money for your services they may (if possible) be willing/able to assist..... Just a thought.

Hey there pharvey, thanks for the fast response.
I do intend asking them eventually. They are a smallish company (with some large clients and a couple of large projects)

I wanted to know in the first instance whether it is at all possible... I thought it would be good to do the minimal bit of homework before I write to them and ask them to step in.

thanks

This is what you need to look at to see if your circumstances meet the criteria for your wife to eventually enter the UK bypassing the usual visa requirements.

Your Thai wife will need to obtain a Schengen to allow her entry to Germany and the EU. Contact the German consulate in Bangkok. Not difficult to get but she will have to prove adequate finances and as you have only recently married you may not be considered a sponsor.

Yes, I've known quite a few colleagues who have got Thai wife's into Europe but to be a sponsor, you normally need a job contract, an address and to be registered in that country which will often mean paying full tax as well. If you can do that, it should be pretty straightforward. If you're just being offered contract work and can't meet the above, another option is if you have contact with any Thai who is already in Germany who you know well enough to get them to act as sponsor as a family friend or whatever.

Many thanks for all the feedback, especially this information. So, it's not so easy after all.

I thought it would be relatively simple that as wife of an EU national, she could live with me and travel with me.

It is relatively simple:

In your place I'd visit the German Embassy or a consulate to get a visa for your wife, and ask them about the authentication of your Thai marriage certificate and your wife's original Thai documents with official German translations/copies. Those would be needed for the residency card of the wife, and might be obtained faster & cheaper here.
