I see a "super senior fixed deposit" that, along with some accident coverage offers a 2.5% bonus on maturity, perhaps that is the account?

As someone who has used the insurance from KTM bank after being knocked of my bike on Xmas eve, I can recccomend them. In fact I have upgraded to the 'Palladium' Acc which for B1500 gives you 20,000 motorcycle accident cover plus lots more including insurance against fraud on your account.

I today opened a account with Bangkok Bank, it could not have been easier, the only document required was my passport which has my Non Imm O visa, even though their web site lists all kinds of requirements. Extremely helpful staff who spoke excellent English.

Soon every bank will be mentioned regarding Best Bank. So here's mine, for whatever it's worth. For 10 years now I've used Krung Thai Bank and never a complaint. KT Bank has an excellent online website and, at least with my branch, service has been spot on. Their annoying number of 'fees' are par for the course ... every Thai bank is mostly the same on that score.
Opening up an account at KT is very easy: a passport (with visa stamp) and address is necessary, but at least in 2007 that was about it.
Frankly I hardly ever go into the branch these days (who does for that matter?), but it's a nice place to sit in the aircon when I'm a tad over-heated.
Main downside is that KT Bank seems to have fewer ATM machines that most of the other banks. No idea why.

^^ There's nearly always a KTB ATM inside or outside any government office. They even have a mobile one outside HH immigration at 19 rai.

Yes, I know where almost every KTB ATM in HH is by now.
My comment was regarding the number of their ATMs compared with the other banks. I have no proof of that, it just seems that way, in Hua Hin, but in other towns and provinces as well.
Just a non-scientific observation after a long time living here.

KTB certainty have a lot less than Kasikorn, 39 compared to 64, all locations are shown on each bank web site.

Just been round 3 banks to try and get an account for a friend and it seems you now need a 1 yr Visa ( not a tourist visa) to open one! As he is looking to buy here there is a bit of a catch 22 situation where you can’t open a bank account until you live here. But you can’t move the money to buy into an account until you have a 1 yr visa or work permit!

Anyone know of a work around? The bank says the rules changed 1 yr ago!

I assisted a tourist to open an account with krungsri to buy a property by getting the 'notary' who did the transfer at the land office to create a dummy rental agreement as a rental agreement was sufficient in the absence of a visa that was about two years ago I guess.

This is Thailand, each region and each branch makes up its own rules. Keep trying different branches and you will eventually succeed. Showing a 1-year rental contract (whether legit or not...) will work in many cases. Sometimes a residence certificate will do the job.

I have a Krungsri account (which only took 3 branch-hops to open), but I was determined to open with Bangkok bank because they allow ACH transfers from the US. I was in Udon Thani at the time, and visited all branches in town (probably 6 or 7), and they all had the same insane requirement unique to Udon - I needed to come open the account with a government official of so-and-so level who will vouch for me. I could have probably paid someone off, but it was too ridiculous.

A week later in Chiang Mai I was able to open the account on the first try using a residence certificate. Be persistent, inquire in every branch you see, and you will eventually get an account.

Many Thai people just cant be bothered to do the work for which they are paid and the unreasonable demands are just part of a way to avoid work. I have 2 policies. Always go early in the morning and I take with me a Thai lady friend who is useless but has a warm friendly manner.

12 months ago it was possible to open a savings account at KBank Hua Hin Market Village on a tourist visa (depositing a healthy amount I think is was maybe key). As someone above has said I think you need to do the rounds or various banks' branches to see who will and who won't.

Go to BKK bank in Bluport. But, beware debt card is not visa so it can't be used other than at an atm.
