Renewing a UK passport from Thailand

Post by Terry »

I will soon be renewing my old passport which is full.

OK - so I have an appointment at the 'Trendy' building, got my forms all filled in, photos endorsed etc.

Can't find how to PAY for it.

As far as I know, they don't take cash and I want to use my Bangkok Bank Credit Card

Has anyone else done this recently?????

They just seem to have this form on the website for credit card payments:

Terry

Not sure if you have the info yet. My wife applied for her 1st UK passport in May. The passport office in UK phoned me and took payment over the phone. They did not take the funds at the embassy at the time of application.

I did it for my sons UK passport in July and I had to complete the form that Steve attached the link to. I gave my UK Barclays Connect Visa card details. Took all the forms to the Trendy building (19th ? floor) and about a week later my account was debited and about 7 weeks later we were informed the passport was ready for collection.

Hi Terry. Do you have any link to what the current process is for actually doing this? I've done a little search but I've found a lot of conflicting information. I gather that your current visa and permit to stay gets transferred across to your new passport, but I also read somewhere that it can take up to two months to get the new passport (!) - if true, what happens if your permit-to-stay expires whilst the process is taking place.

Unfortunately, I reckon the permit to stay is knackered if the timing dosn't work.
Maybe Imm might take pity but don't count on it.

Thanks for all the replies folks.

Steve - thanks for the link - I had seen it before but for some reason I could not find it again.

Skmly - I am aware that they do not take the funds at the time of lodging the application

Pagey - I am aware of the process but here's the rub - and the reason for the question - I don't believe in credit cards, in my first life, my partner was addicted to their use so I despise them. Unfortunately the world is becoming a place where you cannot exist without one. So now I hold a THB card from Bangkok Bank. This is Visa but I cannot get a straight answer from them if I can charge Pounds Sterling to it. I'm getting my office staff here in BKK to check - but the answers are conflicting.

So - Has anyone with a Thai issued Visa card successfully charged a foreign currency to it?
I believe you can - but T.I.T....................

Pleng - I believe - as Lomu has confirmed - you are stuffed if you get the timing wrong

Don't places like Tesco offer the opportunity to have your card charged in whatever currency you prefer? Or is that only foreign cards?

Since my last post

Bangkok Bank inquiries have confirmed that it can be done. A buddy of mine told me that he did it too.

I guess that I am just paranoid....................

^^I use both personal and company, Bangkok Bank, Visa cards when I am travelling and when purchasing goods online. I've never had a problem with any foreign currency

Good luck Terry. Can you let me know how long it took for your new passport to arrive, when all is done and dusted.

The UK used to do passports with extra pages in them, are these still available as living here you seem to get through them rather quickly?

You keep your old passport? Do they do anything to make the passport 'inactive' or do you keep it as-is? Would it be possible, for instance, to apply for a new passport, but still leave the country on your old passport, and come back in on a new tourist visa or 30-day entry stamp?
