Thailand behind(?) other Asian states?
Malaysia = corrupt + muslim!
Indonesia another muslim shithole!

Yep
It seems there is a lot of discussion regarding being made to jump through hoops here in LOS. My observation is a bit different.

In the west we have wonderful things like Welfare and other social services that are designed to keep people

There are hoops to jump through when moving to any country, for instance, the US has this:

Thaland has a lot of bureaucracy and much of it is petty....true. It seems to move on a sea of paper and much of it is unnecessary imo like, for example, having to submit photocopies of your ID so you can use your Thai credit card to buy a new phone or tablet etc. Another one is being treated the same as a two week Russian tourist even though I've lived here over 15 years.

However, you'll find now that the screws have tightened in many places for anyone who is not indigenous of that country...not just Thailand. The noticable thing here in Thailand is just how much it has changed in such a relatively short bit of time and that it didn't used to be so hard to get things done not so long ago here. The system, whilst despite still being bureaucatic, was no way as rigid as it is now and the hoops have slowly become more numerous and continue to vary in shape and size (goal posts are constantly moving) in the last 15 years or so. Back in the day at the turn of the millenium it was party time, anything could be sorted or gotten around.....not so now. Now, we have a much less forgiving and welcoming country despite the garbage you see on TAT ads or report. Also, the locals have changed a lot in how they act and behave....especially the under 30s.

Having said that though, maybe why it has been said that the Europeans here seem more content and willing to support the current disposition is that they have a fairly negative view of what has transpired in the EU country they have come from....what drove them here in the first place? The US has avoided many of the traps the European countries have floundered into.

Just speculating.

I guess I remain and continue to carry on with things here despite some minor misgivings/annoyances is because my wife is happy here with things and our life. Secondly, everyone has to be somewhere and the deal here is still OK despite it not being what it used to be. If either of those were to ever change then I could sell up and move, but it wouldn't be back to Europe...it would probably be New Zealand, far away from all the probable troubles that will happen over the next 40 years.

I have not had the luxury of living in Thailand yet and have only stayed 4 months a few
years ago and will be 2.5 this Winter after Jan 1st. I have heard from my British friend
who used to live in Hua Hin for several years before moving to the Central part of
Thailand. He did not miss Britain much, as he said his neighbour hood became overran
by Muslim immigrants. He went back a few times and seen that the situation had not improved
and even his staunch English brother was bothered by the mix of Christain vs Muslim people
in the city he is living at as well. They both told me that it felt like Britain was getting
overran by both other Europeans, and Africans, and the like. I have a couple American friends
who also still enjoy living in Thailand as they both still work there and have Thai wives, and
children. Their positives were cheaper cost of living, low crime and murder rate compared
to their old American city Detroit. and great Winters compared to Detroit's winters.
When and if I do move there, I would be very slow in buying a place to live, I will do
like my cousin who rents a condo apartment for 300 Canadian per month. Cheap
cheap.

Very good post by the OP

From experience and observation a lot of these "Hoops" are self created.

I live and work here. Every 90 days I drive to the immigration office and report. In and out in minutes as I fill out the form prior. Only time I have waited longer is when some "No money no honey" T-shirt wearing ( His Chang vest obviously in the laundry) has not filled out the form correctly and is standing up shouting at the immigration officer If I leave the country I get a re entry permit first. Not exactly hard work.

I have 2 businesses here. I need to display certain licence on the wall. Bit like I had to when I had a pub in England. I have a Thai driving licence as I would have to have in England. When our team build something that requires permission the plans need approval and signing off. Takes a few days at most generally compared to waiting months, if not years, in England. I came here with no visa and got my 30 days on arrival then popped down to Penang for a business visa when offered a job. Try taking your Thai GF to your country and you will know what hoops are.

I was thinking a fair post, until I came to this. Mrs BB lived quite happily in my country, without much of the red tape we have to deal with here in Thailand. I have no problem with most of the Thai red tape, but Mrs BB often rolls her eyes at what goes on here. Just a few examples:

- Free NHS
- Allowed to work without work permit
- We re-newed her visa once, and the she had indefinite stay status
- No reporting to anybody every 3 months
- Automatic welfare - Family Allowance, Old Age Pension etc

Honestly, taking my wife (girlfriend at the time) to the UK was so much easier, red tape wise, than living here.
