At the end of the day I don't care what I smell like. It's up to them if they come sniffing around

Apparently we can smell other races, not only can they smell westerners :?

GROUND FIGHTING IN THE VIETNAM WAR
"By 1965, the Viet Cong controlled much of the coast and the border areas with Cambodia and Laos and had heavily infiltrated the Mekong Delta. Both American and North Vietnamese soldiers said they cold smell their enemies before they saw them. "You can't camouflage smell," said one U.S. Marine, "I could smell the North Vietnamese before hearing or seeing them. Their smell was not like yours or mine, not Filipino, not South Vietnamese either. If I smelled that smell again I would know it."

I do think that westerners "sweat" more than Thais, so it could be down to personal hygiene with some people  It is necessary to shower quite a few time on some days in Thailand. I think underwear and T shirts etc only worn once a day max, if that. Mr S used to wear up to 3 a day! The big mistake is not to wash clothes after getting hot and sweaty. Do not even think about hanging them up after wearing in the wardrobe :tsk: Also clothes last longer with a wash and rinse with fabric conditioner, no need for a long wash, just a cool wash will do if only worn for a short time.

Also there is the old stale Tobacco / booze stink :P that is horrible, lingers everywhere, body, clothes, hair etc. There is also "the old man" smell :duck: I think when people get older, men and women they have to take more care with the personal hygiene side of things. A drop of "Old Spice" round the "mutton chops" is not going to work!

My son was sitting next to a huge man on a flight back from New York once. He told me the smell was unbearable, he could smell a "fat" smell, like burgers & onion and it made him feel sick.

Mr S says I always smell fragrant  Probably it's down to a little help from Chanel No. 5

Remember this being said in the '70s-'80s but don't think it's so relevant nowadays with many Thais eating Western style junk food.

^ It could be kidney failure or fatty liver. Chew 3 pieces of raw garlic daily and wash down with water. Fix 'ya right up, and you'll fit right in. :D

Personally, I don't think diet has anything to do with people smelling bad or not. If you stink, it is because you are a dirty bugger, period. I have a very keen sense of smell, despite the fact that I smoke, and from my own experience, there are just as many Thais as there are foreigners that stink. It was only the other day that I was tempted to tell an elderly Thai man to take a shower.......he was absolutely minging. With that having been said, I have also frequently come across elderly Farang who are obviously opposed to the use of either soap or deodorant. As others have said, it all boils down to personal hygiene.

Also, I wouldn't want to rely too much on a Thai person's sense of smell. After all, some of the stuff they consume almost smells bad enough to be considered chemical weapons. Hell, my MIL comes home with packets of decayed fish remains which could be used to displace the nutters currently seizing Iraq.

There's something I call "old person smell" that I remember from my early childhood when I went into the bedroom of one of my grandparents.

That seems to be universal as my mother in law has been living with us for a couple of months and even though she is cleaner than me and takes 2 to 3 showers a day, her bedroom and bathroom have that same smell I remember from my childhood.

My wife even agrees that rooms used mostly by old people have an old people smell.

The thing is, her mother is only 11 years older than me and according to her I don't emit that "old person smell" yet.

So what causes it? :?
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?

I still remember the smell from my grandmother when she came to live with us and always assumed it was caused by dying skin cells. We had to scrub everything down in the room, wash the curtains and clean the rugs to get rid of it, after she passed. After reading a couple of articles I'm not so sure.

Funny, before I came to Thailand I was talking to my girl on skype and one of her friends made a comment about "farangs smell bad".

So I got defensive of course. After living here for almost a year now this is how I see it from my perspective:

I always smell good, in the LOS I usually take 2 showers a day, I apply deodorant and put on cologne sometimes but with that being said, when I lived in BKK I used to get on the MRT, Airport rail link or what have you and some "guy" who obviously wasn't prepared for Thai weather would get on a packed train with a sweat soaked shirt, not having showered for 7 hours, and yea they stink!

So with that I realized where the "Farangs smell" thing came from. I don't think farang smell of course, I just think way too many people come here unprepared hygienically and we get stereo typed.

You know, take a shower or two, wear deodorant, and you'll be good lol. The same friend of my gf's who had mentioned farangs smell always mentions how good my cologne smells when we hang out. Just take care of yourself.
