Family pressures on thai wives of farang
I read the whole thread about the murder of Toby Chanaud with great sadness.Summary--Charming English guy marries Thai/Issan lady. Lives in UK where she integrates well and is well liked. Comes back to Thai, she g.ets in debt to money lenders, changes personality and hires two guys to kill husband.they succeed, he is dead and she is in jail for life.
Just a thought, she may or may not be the sourse of the evil. I know of a situation where a Thai wife is subjected to huge family pressure to steal, cheat and deceive her farang husband. They are thinking of leaving Thai and she is the driver for this to escape the anger of her family, because she will not cooperate.

Often the case I'm afraid. Thais are often influenced by their families. How the children should be raised, what money she needs to send each month, who to vote for and so on.
You don't 'shack up' with a Thai girl. You 'shack up' with her family
You don't 'shack up' with a Thai girl. You 'shack up' with her family

this only applies to Bar girls and poorly educated girls, if you meet a girl that has a good job or is at University then this is not always the case.

Contradiction there.Jose wrote:this only applies to Bar girls and poorly educated girls, if you meet a girl that has a good job or is at University then this is not always the case.
Applies to both girl from bar and girl with good job (they can be both). Well educated or not well educated are just as influenced. Girl from rich influential Thai families have just as much pressure as poor families if not more.

I hear the local Hua Hin people (that were raised here before the boom) are sick of the stereotypical Issan (Im sorry, I know personally there are a lot of good ones too) raised by the family that they do not need education just find a old white guy to make their life comfortable. Its come up a lot recently after too many of these types of stories have been making headlines in local Thai news.
Many locals are just plain embarrassed but thing is many locals dont go 'searching' for foreigners...

The idea that you "shack up with her family" is a significant exaggeration and overgeneralisation. It maybe the case with a few but this is simply not the case with many Thai women. In my case and many good friends of mine in successful relationships here, the influence of family is not as strong as you would imagine. It is largely tempered by commitment to their significant others, their own family (i.e. children) and to leading their own lives.

I agree entirely, though exaggeration and overgeneralisation are a fact of life here.Woosie wrote:The idea that you "shack up with her family" is a significant exaggeration and overgeneralisation.

That's a negative. There is a healthy 250km between them and us.

250 kms? Pah! Thai M-in-law lives in Australia, Taiwanese F-in-law lives in UK (when last heard of).

My Mother in law lives with us and it has worked out very well. In addition to her giving us privacy she cooks, cleans and plants the gardenTakiap wrote:Just out of interest.........Do any of the people who have posted on this thread have their in-laws living with them?
The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.

No pressure from my wife or her family. Really nice people and never ask for a thing.

Re: family pressures on thai wives of farang.
I live in cold Canada with my Thai born wife, 2 of her sisters and 3 grown up children in their 20s.
I know this is not the case for a lot of marriages, but for mine, my wife has put her family ahead of
me and this is what I have wound up with.
One advantage I guess is that I have not had to do a lot of house work as there are many helping hands. downside is that most of them talk in Thai and not English which can be irritating.
Other family pressures do not exist that I know of, maybe because we don't live in Land of smiles.
Stargeezer.

The strangest one I know is an expat in bkk who has been married for about 7 years. Her parents, hi-sos, did not approve of the marriage. He has only met MIL once or twice and never metFIL and yet the MIL dominates all the wives actions and decisions.

Definitly does not reply to all girls. The thai family doesnt want out of Thailand they want out of poverty
