I think Somchai has a point. But then again I'm biased against Tesco. Perhaps the best that can be said is that they can't be accused of being an American influence?caller wrote:All of this is posted purely to provoke a barrage of angry responses. What Tesco has brought to Thailand, probably more than any other big retailer, is a cleaner, cooler, more spacious and generally more pleasant shopping experience which Thai people have fallen for hook line and sinker.
Add to that the very cheap in store eateries (again designed Thai style) and - in HH at least - ample bike parking with easy access to the store, and they are onto a winner. In fact at the moment Tesco is proving to be more successful abroad than it is in the UK.
I don't agree that all the products are shit, much as I would like to be able to. The fact is that all supermarkets peddle the sweets etc. You only have to look at a bakery section in any Foodland, or browse the packeged crap in 7Elevens.
It is up to the consumer to avoid the temptations. Which is like expecting tourists to avoid Patpong.

Along with the fried chicken in the local markets you'll find plenty of vendors selling fizzy drinks and donuts. And I'm willing to be they were here long before Tesco!
And why is Tesco, a relatively new outfit in Thailand, bearing the brunt of the responsibility anyway? Do 7/11 not sell fizzy drinks?

As a matter of interest (maybe?), the first 7-11 opened in Thailand in 1989 and Tesco began its Thai operations in 1998, so "only" 9 years difference.
