I think (don't know) there are 2 separate initiatives. This current initiative is the passenger only service.

The second, Government sponsored initiative is the larger car and lorry carrying service, which will depart from Pak Nam Pran. This will happen in a couple of years time - obviously infrastructure needs to be in place first.

As I said, I don't know, but this is my assumption after reading many mixed messages.

No pics as they haven't got one yet. I guess it depends upon the success of these first few months.

Does anyone know if the ferry operated today as planned? Nothing seems to be on the internet today

Just found this article
Turbulent sea still disrupts free ferry service from Pattaya to Hua Hin
Although the ferry service from Pattaya to Hua Hin had commenced first service on January 1, but until today the actual service still could not be launched due to the turbulent sea.
Five days after the company, Royal Passenger Line, scheduled the maiden 113-kilometre voyage from Pattaya to Hua Hin on January 1,  Royal One ship still could not set sail as strong winds and high waves in the Gulf of Thailand remaining the problem.
The company could only allow its ferry to just cruise around Koh Larn island with passengers in board free of charge.
It earlier set January 1-15 as the dates for free rides on its test sail from Pattaya to Hua Hin and will start collecting fares after finishing the 15-day free service.
It will begin charging 1,250 baht single trip for normal class from January 16.
The ship, Royal One, was scheduled to set sail from Pattaya’s Bali Hai pier to Hua Hin at 9.00 am on a 1.40 hour voyage and return on the same day at 5.00 pm.

I guess it's reassuring that safety is the reason for not running. I'm sure the vessel would make it OK in the rougher seas. I'm also sure the safety element is for passenger comfort. The naysayers are already having a field day - imagine if the first couple of trips took 4 hours instead of 2 because of the conditions.

Back in the day when I used to go deep sea fishing in the UK, the small fishing boats would sail in anything up to Force 6. Believe me, that's a lot of swell for a small boat, but I never ever heard of one of them needing to be rescued. This ferry must be at least 10x the size.

Surely they have bought the wrong ferries if they can only cope with 2m waves, when it seems self-evident that's not enough?

There's a Khaosod news blip that it sailed today accompanied by a Thai Navy vessel, but no further details. No idea if east to west or west to east. If it did, I guess more detailed coverage will emerge later tonight. Pete

^^ "you piss with the d**k you have and not the one you dream of". You are probably right that these are not the ideal ferrys during the winter period with higher than normal seas but for the other 9 months they are ok. All credit to the company who are trying to restart this service. Maybe the ferry design is not the best for rough seas but they are aware and taking safety first.

The ferrys are what they have available and no company would buy new boats to service the gulf 365 unless the route is proven viable.

I'm impressed that they are taking high seas and passenger safety seriously.

I suspect that this boat is meant for inland waterways, like the rivercats in Sydney.

Then that is totally against the Met office weather warning, unless they are just trying to determine the limit they can go to. I will never use this mickey mouse boat.

And Bristolian these are not the only ferries available, this is just what they chose to purchase. I have no idea how to determine the correct sort of boat to specify but surely you specify the worst weather that can be expected and any boat purchased MUST exceed that safe limit, but these do not seem correct.

Here's a photo of ferries typical of operation in Hong Kong waters. Open sea operation not dissimilar to the Thai Gulf. Yes, they have larger and faster ferries going to Macau and Zhuhai but the photo is typical and looks exactly the same to me as the ferry now running here. For more photos Google "Hong to China ferries". Pete

I am inclined to agree with this. How did the vessel get to Thailand to start with? Was it carried on a big cargo ship, or sailed here? If it is built from aluminium as I suspect, then it may well be seaworthy in much more that 2 metre waves, albeit uncomfortable for passengers.

Pattaya to Hua Hin took 2hrs 45mins today, although that time is from social media, so can not be substantiated.
