Train From Bangkok to HH
Hi guys, I'm coming to HH with my wife for a holiday in August. She wants to get some sun, Im there to play golf and eat the great food!
Anyhow, rather than get private transfer or taxi I wanted to catch the DRC train down to make it a more relaxed trip to HH. Ive had a look on the Net and the State railway no longer allows on-line tickets.
Does anyone in the Forum know if anybody (web) offers on-line tickets anymore, or do we just hope there will be tickets available when we arrive at Bangkok Station.
Cheers Tony

There was a website called seat61 that used to have all fares, timetables etc that I am sure you used to be able to book seats on. Have just looked and seems no facilities now.

You might have seen this on another thread, but as another alternative there's a good bus service from BKK airport to HH as per the following link.

The 1300 hours is THE train, about 18 carriages, windows that fully open, fans in the roof, locals walking through the train selling food and drink etc.
I try to catch this train and have always been able to buy a ticket when arriving at Hualamphong station about an hour before the train is due to depart.
usually I give it about an hour than walk to the restaurant car and sit in there with a drink or two and some hot freshly cooked food, no microwaved Bacon sarnie on this train.
The train is pretty slow and arrives in Hua Hin about 1730 hours.
The fare depends on what seats are left but it is still reasonable, but if speed and price are your priority then get a mini van from Victory Monument.

To say the lease, it's a horrible experience when you come to and wonder how you survived. So my question is, am I nuts or is the train not a decent alternative? That's what I plan on using from & to Bangkok when I come, so for the minimal added cost, wouldn't this make sense? I did some searches and found little on recent derailments. If I being naïve about Thailand train travel, please let me know.

There are some derailments from time to time, as well as pedestrian/vehicle accidents at crossings. However, I really wouldn't worry about those things too much for the trip from BKK to HH.
I believe there are local trains and express trains. The former being very slow and a long trip to get there. I'll punt now to someone more in the know about schedules and types of service. Pete
EDIT: See some of the above posts.

Re: Train From Bangkok to HH
Thanks I found the site and started poking around. More dead links than I've seen in a while. This message is from one of the travel booking sites thaifocus and i found amusing:
Urgent
Due to a number of rail accidents we are currently reviewing our Online ticket sales
We apologise that we are unable to assist in obtainting Thai train tickets at present
and will make an announcement should we start again.
The DRC express, air conditioned 2nd class all seats is about 3 1/2 hours, it's listed at 382 baht but can't be booked in advance through the railway. Booking agency rates from 412 to 582 plus delivery charges to hotel or DHL to my home. Looks like a crap shoot from all directions.

Try this website for on-line train ticket sales. I don't see the DRC but I do see the 2nd class seat with a/c. http://www.thailandtrainticket.com/
I found this web site only after discovering how much better the airport bus link was, so, we've never bought tickets through the site (I cannot vouch for how well it works).

Re: Train From Bangkok to HH
Thai rail 'suspended' their online booking in 2013. The DRC is often fully booked because it's only 2/3 carriages but they are aircon. The 13.00 is a 3rd class seat only and you should make sure you're on the left side of the train as the right side gets very hot. The nicest train is the BKK-Butterworth at 14:45. That has 1st class carriages that hold 2 people and can also interconnect. A carriage is about 2000 baht and has a steward service. I prefer the 2nd class aircon on this train it's really nice, the seats are wider than on the normal trains and the buffet car is good fun. Another benefit of this train is that it usually runs on time. The Sunghai Kolok train that follows it also has 1st and 2nd class aircon which is quite decent.
Really, it depends what time you're arriving. If it were me, I'd grab a cab from the airport to HH and then get the train on the return journey and book it here in HH. Far more relaxed than humping it to Hualampong to catch a packed out train that may or may not be 2hrs late.

I'll muddle my through on the train. No rush, so if I don't make the express DRC (diesel rail car) I'll catch a later one. Just saw an article about some 13 year old girl throw off the train. A drugged out rail employee has been arrested. My heart goes out to the family.
