Hua Hin to Krabi

Post by Big Boy »

We've got some friends coming for Songkran. Their next stop will be Krabi. Can somebody please suggest the best way to Krabi?

I would suggest taxi back to DM airport and fly to Phuket.

We have got the bus down south from Hua Hin to Suratarni to catch the old tub across to Samui and that was a good 10 or 11 hours to the ferry terminal.

No, unless they decide to hire one.

I think the second answer is not very helpful for somebody who wants to go to KRABI...
Why should you go to Phuket or Samui ???

By plane from Don Muang to Krabi with Nokair, One to Go, Air Asia

By VIP bus from Hua Hin, about 7-8 hours and by car, about the same (600 km)

A friend and I took a trip last month. Here are my notes to him for the HH to Krabi part of the trip. We chose #3

(The notes below don't include the details of earlier discussion about the legendary bus scams in Surat Thani. Here's a taste of the scams: http://wikitravel.org/en/Surat_Thani#Get_in, Deleted by Mod. We do not allow links to competitive websites)

Looked at the HH to Krabi transport options today, including going to the bus station to verify online info. There's four options, not including taking a taxi :-) Listed from most painful to least painful.

1. Bus to Surat Thani (ST), bus to Krabi. Price about 1050b. Two departures, 9:30am or 9:30pm. Day bus arrives ST before sunup. Night bus arrives Krabi around 9pm.
Frequent buses or minivans from ST to Krabi, takes about 3 hrs, cost about 200b. NO VIP buses.
Pros: day bus option.
Cons: day bus arrival time at Krabi, night bus arrival time ST

2. Train to ST, bus to Krabi
Price about 1100b. Depart HH late evening, arrive ST early morn, then 3 hrs on local bus to Krabi.
Pros - sleeper berth
Cons - Slowest. Train is usually late into HH, sometimes by 2 hrs. ST station is 9km out of town, so either pay through nose for a tuk tuk or wait for city bus.

3. Bus HH to Krabi. Depart 10pm, arrive 7:30am. VIP bus
Pros: faster than #1 or #2. No dicking around in ST, infamous home of bus scams.
Cons: I prefer day buses, but this is OK.

4. Fly, Don Mueng to Krabi on AirAsia. 1700b (includes taxes & checked baggage). 7 flights daily. 1h20m duration.
Pros: comfort
Cons: cost. Easier to stay Bangkok the night before but can be done in one day from HH, which means departing HH at 7am, arriving Krabi airport either 3:30pm or 5pm.

The VIP bus that comes north from Phuket stops in Hua Hin I don't think theirs a service from Krabi .
I also think on a bus is a very lean time window 7-8 hours to Krabi.

Lately, Krabi has become very touristy and there are certainly many options to go and come from BKK, stopping in Huahin.
One of them :

Thanks for the responses guys.

Homer, I forwarded your response to our friends as it is the most comprehensive, and is an excellent summary of what I'd found. I was hoping there was a better option that I'd missed.

I've also forwarded your link Gérard.

Kendo, There are definitely options direct to Krabi.

Again, thank you very much.
