Link to my writeup of HH to Butterworth train tips from 2011. Have taken the train south twice since. Only changes to original post:
- Warning that the cleaning staff will treat partially empty water bottles and partially full trash bags as trash. Hide them if you're not done with them. Cleaners work at station stops which are long enough for the passengers to get off.
- One of the 2nd class car types has limited overhead storage for baggage. You can slide it under the berth BUT it always looks like that area hasn't been cleaned in years. Bring a trash can sized baggie if you're concerned about dirty luggage.

If you have a round trip ticket, ask about departure time at butterworth station. Thai ticket shows time for Thai time zone, not Malaysia's zone.

When did Malaysia change their time zone????

I think Malaysia is always an hour ahead of Thailand.

Of course, it could be said that it's more like years ahead in some ways...

EDIT: I couldn't really understand why Thailand is an hour behind, so I had a quick play with Google and found this:

2001. In July 2001, Thailand announced their intention of moving their clocks forward by 1 hour, to be in line with both Malaysia and Singapore, but more importantly, to be on the same time as China and Hong Kong, i.e. 8 hrs ahead of GMT.

Surprisingly, Thailand doesn't appear to have followed up on that announcement...

While I was still working I was in and out of different time zones regularly, sometimes weekly. But now I am stuck in the Jurassic zone!
