Nok Air flight cancellations

Nok Air cancels 20 flights due to shortage of pilots
NOK AIR will ground an additional 20 flights scheduled for service on Tuesday following the abrupt cancellation of 17 flights last Sunday because of a pilot strike, the airline announced yesterday.

The budget airline's allied carriers will carry passengers booked on cancelled flights, Nok Air chief executive officer Patee Sarasin said in a Facebook message.

Those airlines are Thai Smile Airways, Thai Lion Air and Thai Airways International.

Patee said Nok Air's passengers did not need to worry.

In a statement released yesterday, the budget airline said it would not operate flights to and from Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok as well as to and from Hat Yai, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani, Trang, Phitsanulok, Chiang Rai, Udon Thani, Ubon Ratchathani, Sakon Nakhon and Khon Kaen provinces.

A Nok Air source described the flight cancellations as a normal practice given the airline was in the process of resolving an internal management problem.

Flight schedules are normally amended or cancelled according to the company's current resources and capacity, the source added.

The source said the passengers of cancelled flights would be compensated in accordance with Department of Civil Aviation regulations.

Nok Air has started paying |compensation to the passengers affected by last Sunday's flight |cancellations, the airline said in a statement issued on Friday.

The airline has informed the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand about the flight cancellations, it said.

Affected passengers are advised to contact the airline's call centre on 1318 for further information.

More than 3,000 Nok Air passengers were left stranded at airports last Sunday.

Some of the striking pilots are dissatisfied over the airline not passing a new aviation management audit based on European Aviation Safety Agency standards.

In its statement, the airline said it would not comment on an internal human resource issue as it reserves the right to confidentiality and it would not respond to rumours.

Nok Air said it would announce any update on the matter via social media.

it seems the pilots have been somewhat gagged in this matter.

Unconfirmed reports from other websites are saying that not only will Tuesdays flights be cancelled but the rest of the week as well.

VERY bad form to not give the reason for Tuesdays cancellations. The rest is just rumor.

Nok is having it's problems!

If the pilots have concerns so would I. Better to be on the ground wishing you were flying rather than flying and wishing you were on the ground.

Nok Air extends flight cancellations
Nok Air continues to cancel some scheduled domestic services, with some round flights to Khon Kaen and Trang now suspended from Tuesday through to Sunday, as local authorities complain that tourism is been affected in their province.

Atthyaya Larpmark, director of Khon Kaen airport, said on Tuesday that Nok Air has cancelled one round trip a day between Bangkok and the northeastern province of Khon Kaen, from Feb 23 to 28.

Flights operated by Thai Smile and Thai AirAsia would, however, cater for the passengers booked on the cancelled Khon Kaen flights.

Nok Air normally operates three daily round trips between Don Mueang in Bangkok and Khon Kaen. One has been cancelled - flights DD9814 and DD9815. Passengers would not be seriously inconvenienced because the airline had informed them in advance of the alternative arrangement, he said.

The airport director said Nok Air clients were still seeking refunds for tickets bought earlier at the airport. Many people said they had lost confidence in Nok Air and would move their custom to other airlines.

In the southern province of Trang, passengers reportedly also received a message from Nok Air that one of its three daily round trips between Bangkok and Trang (flights DD7406 and DD7407) would be cancelled during Feb 23-28.

Trang governor Detrat Simasiri said on Tuesday the flight cancellations were affecting tourism in Trang, which is in the tourist high season. Travellers who had booked tickets were being greatly inconvenienced because they would have to land at other airports such as Krabi and Hat Yai.

He hoped that another airline which had previously applied for a licence to fly to Trang could help. But civil aviation authorities would need to quickly issue the licence.

Karuna Dechartwong na Ayutthaya, director of the Trang office of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, also said most visitors to Trang travelled by air and the flight cancellations were affecting the tourism sector.

On Feb 14, 10 pilots' sudden absence affected 17 Nok Air flights and about 3,000 travellers. Nok Air announced the cancellation of 20 flights on Tuesday.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand is currently investigating the Feb 14 stoppage, which resulted in one pilot being fired, two others suspended and inquiries being launched involving seven more.

Nok Air said earlier that the flash strike resulted from the dissatisfaction of some pilots who did not pass a new aviation management audit based on standards set by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the International Air Transport Association. Among the EASA measures is a ban on pilots concurrently holding management positions.

The pilots earlier said separately they would not even call their action a strike. They claimed the cancellations were due to a critical shortage of pilots and overwork.

Nok Air crisis ‘threatens entire aviation industry’
THAILAND'S TOP aviation regulator has expressed concern that the Nok Air crisis could hurt the overall airline industry if the situation is not brought under control quickly.

Chula Sukmanop, the acting director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), said yesterday that authorities were closely watching the Nok Air |situation after more than 41 flights had been cancelled since February 14.

Yesterday, another four flights between Don Mueang International Airport and Chiang Mai were cancelled, while 20 were cancelled on Tuesday and another eight on Wednesday.

So far, Nok Air has been helped by six other airlines that have provided substitute flights for passengers on a charter basis.

As the regulator, CAAT is worried there could be more turbulence hitting the Thai airline sector if Nok Air does not resolve its shortage of pilots quickly.

On average, Nok Air operates a total of 100 domestic flights daily.

The airline said it would have to reduce the number of flights by 20 per day until at least March 10 because of the shortage of pilots.

Another 17 pilots out of Nok Air's total of 192 have tendered their resignations effective on March 1, posing a new challenge for the airline.
