I guess it depends who you fly with - I normally fly to/from the UK on Etihad and when you are in the process of booking the ticket (i.e. Before you pay) it clearly shows you whether you can change the dates and how much it costs. Most people are looking for the cheapest ticket so a change of date is normally $100, but if you buy a more expensive (flexible) ticket, the change is normally free.
