Perhaps not surprising, but it has just been announced that Emirates will begin charging for seat assignments on many economy fares as of October 3, 2016. The new charge will apply for Economy Special and Economy Saver fares, though it won’t apply for Economy Flex, Economy Flex Plus, Business Class, and First Class fares.

As before, all passengers will be able to select seats for free through online check-in, starting 48 hours out.

Etihat also try to collect more money from travellers,

the cheapest Etihat booking class "economy saver" includes only 1 peace of luggage
the next higher booking class "economy classic" and "economy flex" includes 2 peace of luggage
so if you have a thai wife, with a lot of luggage, you should avoid to book "economy saver"
take it easy

as well as London, Manchester, Newcastle options it might be worth considering Emirates flights from Amsterdam. It's easy and cheap to get to from Glasgow and EK has two A380 flights departing from AMS daily. Dusseldorf also has two EK flights daily, but no idea if that's easily (and cheaply) accessible from Glasgow. Amsterdam definitely is. And it's a good airport. I have never paid in excess of 600quid for AMS to BKK. Certainly not when booking 7 months in advance. The only downside when flying EK from AMS is it doesn't have a dedicated EK lounge. You either have to use the Swissair lounge or you get 50euro food vouchers. Dusseldorf does have an EK lounge.

You can also redeem your air miles for cash off flights with Emirates now. It Brought my 3 month ticket down to £480 which I felt wasn't bad. It's a pain about the seats though..I booked in early and managed to get the ones I wanted this time.
Now semi retired 60:40 Thailand: UK ( seems to be working well)

Not sure if you have Qatar Air in and out of Bangkok, but I had to go to the UK 4 weeks before Christmas for my Mums Funeral. I got a return from Perth to London for just under $1500AUD which was pretty good compared to what others wanted so close to Xmas.

Flew Perth to Dhoa in just over 11hrs, 2 hr layover in Dhoa and then just over 7 hours to London. My 1st time using them, and was pretty impressed with the overall service.

Have a look and see how they compare to Emirates, it might be worth a look

Yes, I used Qatar a couple of times last year from Birmingham to Bangkok and it was a good service at a very competitive price. One thing I thought was better was the transfer in Doha which was much easier due to the smaller and less congested airport, Dubai can be a convoluted experience with lengthy bus rides, trains between gates and long lines for security.

I flew with Qatar at Xmas and have booked again in June and December from Brum to Bangkok.
Paid £302 in June and £335 in December!
The service is not as good as Emirates in my opinion with a little less space in the seats.
At these prices however is was a no brainer not to book them.
Good turn around times in Doha two hours each way.

Not happy with Etihad i had to book a flight on the 7th January for my wife to rush home for her sick Mum. Heathrow to Abu Dhabi 6 hour stop over then on to Bangkok one hour stop over on the return i thought £580.00 Was a reasonable fare. However i needed to extend her return flight with flexible dates they wanted £485.00 to change the flight on their app so i phoned them and was told thats the price. To change the flight was £235.00 plus another air fare. I disputed this after being told it would be £80.00 and if avaliablity no extra charge for ticket. Customer services put me on hold then came back and told me thats the price as i had purchased an economy ticket and it would be cheaper to buy another return ticket. So i purchased another ticket to extend ten days for £385.00 i was not very happy.
My wife ruturned to the UK and her Mum passed away four days later. I've got my wife on a direct same day night flight today booked on Skyscanner with Eva return £687.00.

In an effort to beat the competition all of these airlines now seem to be offering super economy tickets with absolutely no extras. So they'll rape you if you want to select a seat in advance, increase your baggage or change the flight dates. The next level up "economy flex" or whatever they call it can also stick a chunk onto the price so they get you either way.

False economy i feel mugged off won't book with them again. The wife said it was a good flight experience but i feel they are pulling the same stunts as the short haul low cost carriers. Not what you would really expect from a national airline. To charge almost as much to change a already paid for flight is not good business forcing you to buy another ticket screw them.
