A Lion Air flight carrying about 100 people overshot a runway while landing at Bali International Airport on Saturday and ended up in water, officials said.

Only one person so far is confirmed as having suffered injuries, Lion Air spokesman told a news conference in Jakarta. :D

He said 18 people had been taken to the hospital to be checked over, fewer than Indonesian officials initially indicated.

The others are still being examined by doctors,

The plane, a Boeing 737-800, has only been in use by Lion Air since March, he said.Tthe plane is a new one and that the pilot was fit to fly. Lion Air crew can fly a maximum of eight hours per day. The plane had flown earlier in the day from Palu, Central Sulawesi, to Banjarmasin, Kalimantan. It then proceeded to Bandung and then Bali.

It's not clear whether the same pilot was flying the aircraft the entire time.

Doug Sovern, of KCBS Radio in San Francisco, was at the airport when the incident happened.
He described seeing the plane, with a big crack running through the fuselage, in the Indian Ocean off the end of the runway.

At first people feared the worst, he said, but it now seems the passengers and crew have had a fairly miraculous escape -- with shades of the "Miracle on the Hudson."

In that 2009 incident, Capt. Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger was forced to make an emergency landing on the Hudson River after his Airbus A320 collided with a flock of geese and lost thrust 2,700 feet over Manhattan. Everyone was rescued.

Indonesian Transportation Minister E.E. Mangindaan earlier said about 100 people were on board the aircraft. He said everyone survived, but about 50 passengers were hospitalized.
Mangindaan said he did not know the conditions of those taken to the hospital.

Usual confusion and / or bad reporting with this. The runway (only one) is orientated 09 / 27, that is: east to west. It has water at both ends of it, but is long enough for a B747.

The Boeing 737-800 was operated by the budget airline Lion Air, which recently sealed blockbuster orders for hundreds of new planes.

Lion is preparing to challenge AirAsia in the regional no-frills market but it is banned from US and European airspace because of safety concerns.

The domestic flight ended with passengers screaming in terror as the aircraft hit the water after missing the runway at the popular resort island's Denpasar airport, despite fine weather.

The plane came to rest partially submerged in the water not far from the end of the runway, with inflatable slides deployed from the front exits and a gaping crack in the fuselage toward the rear.

Passengers in life jackets could be seen in the water.

"The plane was about to land when suddenly it fell into the sea. People on board panicked and began screaming," a passenger named Dewi told AFP, her voice still shaking.

Its all strange reporting! That Bkk post report states it didn't even make the runway and thats what the few passengers interviewed have said - that it landed in the water, but most papers still report of overshooting the runway? Whatever, pleased they all survived.

Lion Air are banned from flying in europe because of safety concerns.

If it didn't reach the runway, surely it would be facing the other way.

Yes, I was working for an airline in Indonesia when Lion Air, along with several other domestic operators, started up and the people behind them really had no idea about the aviation industry.
This was at the time when you get an Indonesian airworthiness certificate for an airliner for $2,000 cash in an unmarked envelope!

We can't really tell, can we? Nereus said the runway runs east-west, but the plane appears to be facing north - and we have no idea where the runway is in the photo.

No, but the land mass appears behind it. Certainly watching the news earlier, they placed the runway behind the plane.

I think it is more likely to have overshot. It may have swung around on impact but I expect that it would have had a great deal more damage than what appears.

There is now no doubt that the aircraft landed short in the water, although no reason found yet. Much speculation, both about the accident, and Lion Air. The following link has some good discussion if you weed out the crap.

From the photo it can be seen that the boundary fence at the approach end of runway 09 is intact, where it would have been destroyed if the aircraft had gone through it. The heading of the aircraft in the water is because it is partly floating and the wind / water currents have swung it around.

An interesting point that having been away from the industry for so long I was unaware of. In the discussion much rhetoric is made of what is terned P2F, or Pay To Fly. Basically seems to be that SOME airlines are charging low time pilots big bucks to fly in the right hand seat to build hours, which MAY eventually lead to a "proper" job!
