Emirates: better planes better service. TV in back of seat so you watch what you choose. Stopover allows you to go duty free shopping without the fear of being stitched up by corrupt air port staff colluding with Thai Air.

Thai: expensive and indifferent. TV in the overhead so you get to sit through hour after hour of brainless rom coms so none of the little sweeties see an explosion. You get to run the King Power gauntlet where if you get away with not being stitched up you get sold counterfeit goods instead.

We have not tried emirates yet but we know many people who has, and they are all very satisfied with the service.

Next time we go, we will be flying emirates. Both because of the service but also for the fact that the trip to and from europe can be divided into 6 hours to dubai, a good 8 hours sleep in the dubai airport hotel and finally 6 hours or so to BKK.

This way we will arrive fresh and well - and we will have saved about 30% compared to most other airlines (incuding the hotel)

Now that is interesting. Can you enlarge on flight times, who flight and hotel are booked through? All info welcome. Many thanks.

Emirates is better than most. Newer planes, excellent in-flight entertainment and good food and service.
As for the transfer in Dubai it does seem as if the schedule is designed to make you stay there a bit longer (and spend more at duty-free) than you may wish - often 4 + hours.
Check the departure gate well in time as the terminals are now so big it can take more than 30 mins to walk from one end to the other.
If you are there for many hours there's a lounge you can pay to go and use with free snacks, drinks, internet etc. open to all including economy class passengers. Could also go and look around Dubai to pass the time
or they allow a free 1-2 night stopover in some discounted hotels.

Flying from Manchester my stop overs are only ever around 3 hours, perfect timing for me, a couple of cigs and beers in the business lounge and you're off again. I wouldn't like the 8 hours, hotel or not.

Anything over about 3 hours can be a pain. Maybe better timings departing from Heathrow :( instead of Gatwick :D

As far as I know, you are not able to book flight and hotel at the same time - unless off course you ask a travel agent to do that.

If you go to:
http://www.emirates.com/

you can book practically any combination of fligts, and if you go to:

http://www.dih-dca.com/dih-dca/reservat ... quest.aspx

you can book the hotel.

As you say, you generally travel alone, and I will agree that if I where to travel alone I would feel the same way. But we always travel with the children, and with a 5 hour drive before the airport, I am sure that the children will appreciate a good nights sleep in the middle - and so will I, since traveling with children is quite tough.
