Jetstar

Post by Beeblebrox »

Probably not much use unless you live "down under", but I've been watching flight prices in the hope that fares may reduce on the basis that some people wont travel due to what's happened to exchange rates.

Jetstar from Christchurch to Bangkok return has dropped by a bit over $600 now, so I'm booked from 18/12/08 til 1/1/09. Not a long trip but gets me back in time to rest & start work again on 5/1/09. Our exchange rate normally 25ish baht to the $1, now around 20 baht. I'm not a big spender so I reckon the reduced airfare will cover what I lose on the exchange rate :D

This will be a budget trip for me as it is more on impulse than planned. Looks like I'm sleeping on a mates couch in Samui to start with.

Any of you in other countries noticing airfares dropping?

Not a bad price BB. What the weather like March-May? My TGF really wants to see snow...do you get snow as early as May? What would you consider an average price for a hotel/ guest house room?

Hi CC, Here (Christchurch), March to May is not great. Maybe 18C max average, though in March some days would beat 20C. May can be cold 12-13C sometimes lower. Other parts of the country can be hotter or colder. Can't remember much snow here in May. There are mountains with ski fields just over an hour away. They'd have some snow, but maybe not ski-able. Rooms are expensive everywhere in NZ IMO, I'm guessing not likely to be under $100/night (2010baht at today's rate).

Here's a link http://www.tourism.net.nz/region/christ ... mmodation/ that should give you a better idea

Uh, I don't see a price there. He's saying it has dropped by a bit over $600, not to a bit over $600...

I'm interested in the other way too (Bangkok to NZ), so what is the price and I assume you are quoting NZ dollars... correct?

Thanks!

Yes $NZ. It's cost me $1,580 return including food. Jetstar you have to pay for extras & it's $30 each way for food. Run out of DVD players, but they were $12 each way. Apparently there may be some available on the plane, but all available for pre-booking have gone.

Last December I paid $2,300 with Qantas, but that included going to Phuket, but I can't remember the cost of the Phuket leg, that's why I say $600 saved - figures aren't exact.

Here's their link http://www.jetstar.com/nz/en/index.html

Selecting from BKK should give you your price in Baht

Thanks Beeblebrox,

When would be the best time (weather wise) to visit if one was going to spend a couple of weeks driving around both islands. I've been there before and I know the climate from north to south is varied from tropical in the North (Bay Islands?) to glacial in the south (Queenstown?), but overall, what month would you recommend.

I think February is the best month. Schools will have started again so that reduces the crowds - which are really non-existent compared to other countries. Our total population is somewhere round 4 million. January & March should get you some good weather too, but there are never any guarantees.

Hi Beeblebrox,

Not sure if you have flown Jetstar before, but I found them better than expected. Overall for what you pay (no frills) its a reasonable flight. The seats are slightly smaller however, if you are over 6 ft you may be a bit squashed, but they are leather and quite nice.

They do not mind you taking your own food on board if you choose not to buy it on the plane and they charge for drinks and snacks.

The pilots are professional and the staff are friendlier than Qantas.

They use newer aircraft (A330-200 I think), and my favourite thing about them is the window seat only has two seats so I am not sitting with some stranger and have some sort of privacy.

By the way, have a great time! Wish I was going!
