Wild Boar in the Suburbs

Post by Big Boy »

Driving one of my dogs to the vet this morning, we had a family of what we assumed to be Wild Boar cross the road in front of us. Certainly something neither Mrs BB nor I had ever seen before.

The beginning of "Life After People"?

PS: They better look out or they'll all end up on someone's BBQ tonight.

There must be a few about. When I was down at Khao Takiab a couple of months ago when were checking our bar map, there was one walking down the pavement towards me. Even though I had my camera in hand, I was so astounded that I didn't think of taking a photo. It turned off before I got too close.

Used to hunt wild pigs in Oz and I doubt very much that the family are "wild". Even in built up areas close to their habitat they are very elusive and shy. More likely to have escaped from a domestic pen.

Agreed, these are very different from anything I ever saw in Pakistan and India - wild boar are aggressive and elusive, with a nasty temperament. You try to find them for one reason only - to kill them. And yes, they are jolly tasty after being roasted in a dug-out oven!
The locals used to get paid a small reward by the local authorities in exchange for a boar's tail.
This is the way

The boar I've seen, and you do see the odd one or two off road between here and Cha-am, are usually black. The ones in your vid looked brown. Probably domesticated as they usually stay well away from buildings.

These were the same colour as the Boar I'd seen at Fort Thanarat, which are supposedly wild - there you have all 3 of my sightings listed now. However, you and Nereus are correct - the wild bit was a presumption on my part. There is plenty of land in that area where wild animals could survive, although it seems to be decreasing by the day.

You don't ever want to get the wild version into your yard at night as you'll awaken to a plowed field ready for planting! I endured them for seven years on the big island of Hawaii and they are mean and nasty creatures. Will slice you and/or your dog up into ribbons very quickly. Pete

I will post this video just as a matter of interest. Mods, please delete it if not appropriate.

This NOT me, where I was it is thick bush, so dogs on the ground is the method. However, I was licenced to cull wild donkeys in a different area where I used the chopper.

In other parts of Australia, especially in North Queensland, the pigs are a major problem in some areas, and in open country this method is very effective.

Couldn't be happier to see this. I hope all States/Countries follow. Poison or other method makes no difference. They have been a plague for centuries :guns: Pete

He is using a shotgun, so probably loaded with 00 shot, or "buckshot". We also used solid 12g shells, but it is better on a larger animal. Donkeys, and at the time Buffalo, we used 7.62 / .308 Winchester soft nose bullets.

It's in the news here now also. They "don't want the pigs killed...." but they eat pork as part of their normal diet almost daily. Brainless. :banghead: Pete
